DICE servers disappear from Battlefield 3, rental servers take precedence

Thursday, 10th May 2012 16:15 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Many Battlefield 3 players have noticed it’s becoming almost impossible to find EA run servers for the game and DICE-hosted servers have all but disappeared from the game, while rental servers have been placed front and center. According to a report on VentureBeat, a search for official servers found 17 EA run servers, but none run by DICE. Community manager Daniel Matros opened up the forums for player communication on the matter, and after several complaints on the matter replied: “There is only so much physical space and digital space where you can have servers. The community requested [rental servers] and we delivered.” He did, however, say he would mention the community’s concerns to DICE. We’ll keep you updated on the situation as more information becomes available.

    So we’re paying Ea to make more money?

    @1 Players *wanted* rental servers. It’s not like EA forced people to pay for them or something.

    If you have hundred of rented servers, why would you even need “official” ones anyway? They still belong to EA either way. And this way, you’ll find more variety and diversity in the matches, as well as setups more accustomed to your own personal tastes.

    @2

    But we are still being charged for the rental servers. If EA takes their own free servers down, it stops costing them money. If they make every server payed for by the player, they would be making way more money than with free standardized servers. People consistently paying EA for EA’s own servers, should at least get map packs or something for free.

    @3 You pay for the ability to tailor a server to your own needs. If you don’t want that, don’t pay them for servers, and join one, paid by someone else, that fits your criteria. Seriously, they don’t have to give anything back. People asked for the the choice to buy custom servers, and were given it. Now they complain that EA have taken down their own servers which are no longer necessary?

    Sometimes I think the Internet is powered by whine of immature people complaining about everything.

    It’s a free market. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.

    Reason that we rented one is sick of all the mixed up dice servers etc that was before rent servers came out. Conquest > All Maps > Basic Settings can’t find for crap. So thats what our server is for :) (I hate it keeps reseting we get 2-3 of us in it when it’s empty to try start the server going play few hours then later in day will all get kicked as the server like resets or something pain in the ass -.-) so goes back to 0/24 again blah.

    tbh if it wasn’t for all the hackers on PC and thus the need to have admins around to manually boot their sorry asses (since Punkbuster is a pile of wank that seems to do a better job of kicking legit players than any actual cheaters) then I would like some neutral servers to play on where there’s like an all-map rotation with no weapon limits and no diva admins who are ok with being slightly shady with their tools when things aren’t going their way or when they want x,y or z vehicle that somebody else got to first.

    @3 Uuuh… what?

    You pay to have one, not to play on them. If you’re not renting one, it’s not costing you anything extra.

    People are freely choosing to rent them. They asked for the feature. The playerbase wants to ability to customise their games, and EA is giving the playerbase exactly what it wants.

    You’re complaining about a company giving the fans what they want.

    Wanting rented servers and wanting official ones also are not mutually exclusive. For one thing a lot of the private servers have stupid high ticket counts or are 24/7 with only one map type. You just get dumped into them via quick game. You also have some servers with bad admins who just ban people who are doing well. Not to mention a very small percentage of the community are the ones who asked for rented servers. What EA has done is dumb. It’s not petty whining. A lot of people are having these issues. Just check any battlefield forum.

    @8 “You just get dumped into them via quick game.”

    That’s your own fault for having absolutely no preferences whatsoever.

    “I didn’t choose what I wanted to play, but I’m still going to complain about not getting what I want.”

    I like Rush matches on Seine Crossing. Someone else might prefer Conquest matches on Caspian Border.

    Regardless, I’ve been playing the game solidly for the past few weeks, and I can say I haven’t bumped into any of those problems, but it probably helps that I only play the game when I’m playing with friends.

    There is no preference for Ticket Count. So they fundamentally broke the quick game feature. There is also no filter for ticket count on the server browser. The only way you know the ticket count is when you actually enter the game or if somebody places it in the server description. Plenty of people don’t do that. So they dropped all their servers and provided not enough features to adequately filter.

    Any information if this is also happening in consoles as well, or this is only a PC issue?

    The console side is where the complaints are coming from. When they added rented servers in the last patch they didn’t keep nearly any of the official ones. Almost all games are on private servers now.

    @11, I haven’t seen an official server on PC since the alpha and beta, that answer your question?

    This is a console issue.

    Rented servers need to be completely separate from official EA/DICE servers.

    You don’t just do one or the other, you do both, but in separate lists.

    We shouldn’t be forced to play rented servers as the only way to enjoy BF3 MP.

    Its can be very frustrating, when you and your squadmates are doing a superb job at PTO and get banned towards the end of a game for *no* reason. It happened several times and since then I’m not so engaged in BF3 anymore. Used to play it nearly every day. And what the reaper says about the high ticket count can also be annoying sometimes. All on XBL btw.

    Hi. A topic exists on getsatisfaction.com for this issue.

    https://getsatisfaction.com/battlefield3/topics/how_to_have_matches_on_public_servers_since_private_ones

    I hope DICE and EA will take it in consideration. Provide more public servers, and just allow us to filter them through a single criteria.

    I am quite surprised of that non respect of customers. Won’t be surprised if a class action happens.

    Bye
