Demon’s Souls players to determine final World Tendency event

Tuesday, 1st May 2012 23:43 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Atlus has asked Demon’s Souls fans to vote on which World Tendency the game should close on when the US servers shut down for good on May 31.

In an email sent to the Atlus Faithful mailing list, players were given the chance to choose pure black or white World Tendency for the game’s final days.

According to the latest update at time of writing, the vote is sitting at about 62% in favour of white.

Those who aren’t already members of the Faithful can sign up here – another vote will be held on May 16, so you still have a chance to affect the game’s ending.

For those not in the know, the World Tendency system is is a metric that applies across the individual environments in Demon’s Souls. When a player dies in human form in a world, the tendency is pushed to black, and when they kill a boss, it shifts towards white. At either extreme, special events occur – new enemies, paths and characters are encountered, meaning players wanting to see and do everything must explore both tendencies.

Complicating this factor, the overal world tendency of every game connected to the network affects the server tendency, which in turn gently nudges individual games inline with the consensus; during world tendency events, players are rapidly drawn towards whichever extreme is set on the server end.

PlayStation 3 exclusive Demon’s Souls was released in the US in late 2009 and was highly praised for several instances of unusual network play. It hit Europe in mid 2010; PAL publisher Namco Bandai has not indicated whether it will close its servers when Atlus shuts down the US ones.

Spiritual successo, Dark Souls is available on both HD consoles and is coming to PC.

It’s still worth playing, but it’s a shame to see the online features go away. I never finished it, myself, got about halfway through before I was distracted by other games, and then Dark Souls came out… Haven’t finished that yet, either, lol.

@1, you can still play the game without the online services, but it does kinda suck that they’re closing them down now. I won’t get through the game in time :(

It’s a good game in its own right, and tbh a lot of the helpful messages have been nudged out by “I need help, recommend this message” spam. I find blood stains are usually not that helpful except to tell you there are bad guys round the corner – and there are bad guys round most corners in this game.

Wish I hadn’t broken off to play God of War 3 the last couple of weeks now though.

Give us til the end of the year eh guys?

Get cracking lads, there’s still time to get through the whole game. You’ve got a month and only a month to experience one of the finest online games ever crafted!
