PlayStation All Stars: Battle Royale out this holiday

Friday, 27 April 2012 06:05 GMT By Johnny Cullen

It’s official: PlayStation All Stars: Battle Royale has been announced on GameTrailers TV from Superbot Entertainment for PlayStation 3. Full details and GTTV episode inside.

PlayStation All Stars: Battle Royale is rumour no more. The fighter, speculated to be in the works since last year, has made its official bow on GameTrailers TV.

Superbot Entertainment is developing the title, having been created internally from Sony Santa Monica to make the game. Gameplay, as expected, is similar to that of Super Smash Bros, and is running at 60FPS.

Spotted in the show are gameplay stages themed around God of War, Buzz, LittleBigPlanet, Patapon and Ratchet & Clank.

The first characters are also to set to be announced during the episode, but spotted already are Kratos, Parappa the Rapper, Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal, Fat Princess, Colonel Radec from Killzone and Sly Racoon.

Third-party characters will make an appearance in the game, a la SSB Brawl, but those involved are yet to be announced. More details will be announced at E3 in nearly five weeks time.

Battle Royale launches this holiday for PS3. Watch the full reveal from the GTTV episode, more video and first screens below.

I saw it and it looks like crap in 60 frames per second. Wow. Such an achievement.

They also confirmed that there will be 3rd party characters in the game.

  2. speedxl01

It seems exactly like S Smash Bros but with Sony characters, and that’s a good thing, I know some friends that like a lot SSMB who will be glad with this game if they pull it right.

    #2 3 years ago
  3. Erthazus

It’s not just the same game, but even UI is from Smash Bros (with health and “Super” bar exception).

Radec’s special is exactly the same like with Solid Snake. I’m actually shocked that they copied the game completely.

@2,3: yea it really is super sony smash bros.
they bought a license from nintendo right? if not nintendo should probably sue them.
nintendo gets copied by both ms and sony a lot…and mostly badly. the spark is always missing. mod nation racers is not bad but not a mario kart killer. i still kinda liked the gameplay footage shown here.
will keep an eye on this one for sure. kind of like the backgrounds. played a lot of these games…

  6. Christopher Jack

@5, Ah, the American way: Something looks similar, sue them! Nintendo don’t own the fighting genre & Sony owns most of the characters & have already obtained the rights to any 3rd party owned guys. Sure Ninty could try & sue for its likeness, but chances are that their are other games of similar style before SSB. I mean if you were the creators behind Doom (or whatever the first fps was), that shouldn’t automatically mean that every other fps needs to pay royalties for it.

  7. Erthazus

@6, It’s not one thing it’s all these little things that makes everyone feel like Sony is trying to copy the competition, and it’s not even a “let’s copy it and make it much better” it’s let’s just copy it and sell it to the masses.

They have every right to copy every shit they want like with their shitty tablets and then sell “Zero” of them.

Sony has a huge variety of development studios. Couldn’t one of them have come up with a unique fighting game formula?

Well, 4 billion loss is a good start i guess.

  8. Gekidami

Wah wah wah. I bet these comments were written yesterday and saved in a notepad to be copy & pasted once the game was shown.

We havent even seen a collective 2mins of the game yet, but i guess we already know everything about it.

People asked for a game like this, Sony delivered. They didnt want a new fighting game, they wanted Sony Smash Bros. Jeesh, dont you people visit games forums?

Well I didn’t hear anyone but the Nintendo faithful complain about Sony’s early Crash Team Racing(8.8 on metacritic, 9.4 in user ratings) which was clearly inspired by Mario Kart.

Wow, this is even a bigger and more shameless clone than Move. Seriously, they could have at least tried a more 3D look like Power Stone. This is pretty much SSB.

So you recommend a way of not copying one person by copying a different person? Seriously people…

Who cares if it’s a clone of SSB, SSB is also awesome!!

@8 You are right, that’s what people wanted, and I think it’s good since there’s no other game like this on PS3.

There are a lot of examples of companies copying each other concepts, it’s no case..

@12, Power Stone is 3D brawler, but if they could copy that formula there would be less complain and with 3D mode PS3 could show a potential.

But here is a serious 2D Rip Off with the same Nintendo brawler UI. It’s not “was clearly inspired by Mario Kart” blah blah blah.

From a business perspective it’s a bland, typical Sony Move. “they have it, let’s join them” and sell in the end nothing.

Hmm, remember that shitty Move game… Move Heroes? That thing sucked and sold really bad to begin with. Because there was no soul except for pathetic Rip Off.

    #18 3 years ago
  19. Christopher Jack

@16, All I can say to that is something a little similar to what I said earlier: Crash Team Racing. A game of critical acclaim & sold around five million copies- simply an excellent game in its own right despite having obvious’sources of inspiration’ but calling it a cheap knock off is ignorant & simply degrading to the team that made it.

@18, They aren’t as relaxed as you think, they maybe humble when someone takes a game they made & makes it something different, which I respect, but they are often on the attack of blatant rip offs, emulators & other forms of piracy like those R4 cards, which you can’t really fault them for.

@19…it is too early to say something about this game…but on first sight it really really totally looks like smash bros, just with sony mascots and backgrounds. it really looks like a copy paste job.
i still like the idea of having such a game for the ps3.! smash bros is so awesome. i am still interested in the game.

    @20: thx for the link!
really sounds like sony changed some stuff in the gameplay department.
can´t wait to check it out myself.

I absolutely love the way gamers are trippin over themselfs fighting with one another that this is similar to SSB LOL

Its a little pathetic really. You dont hear people claim COD is a rip off of DOOM do you. Fuck me, gamers are so fuckin fickle its crazy!!!

Its safe to say this game is built for the fans. Plain and simple.

Is it just me or does the game look like it’s running on the same engine as SSBB? O_o I mean, the graphics are quite similar and well everything else. Sure, if they manage to pull this off and make a decent game then good for Sony seeing as they could need some good exclusives at the time. Altough I gotta say it sure looks like a rip off with nothing new to the table though time will tell…

Good thing Sony made a MOVE like this. Because we all know that Ninetendo games and Wii/WiiU are just for young kids and housewives. So bravo for Playstation All Stars: Battle Royale! I am sure that it will be far more mature and really deliver that Core game experience that can only be found on a PS3.

Whats funny to me are the fans. Its great to diss the Wii. But when Sony clones another Wii experience, the game gets praise and anticipation by the same fans? Don’t talk about fanboys around here, your glass house could shatter from all of the stones flying around.

  41. nikk900

I can’t wait for this. I don’t care if people say “it’s a smash bros rip-off”. Smash bros is a good game, and playstation fans have wanted this for a long time. Companies copy each other all the time. The move took the wii controller to the next level. The kinect took the eye toy to the next level. It’s not just games either, it happens with lots of things. If something is popular then it will be copied. We wouldn’t have a lot of great games if people didn’t copy each other. Stop crying!

    #41 3 years ago
  42. lexph3re

I think it’s funny. In order to be a smash rip off doesn’t it have to have “Smash” components? There’s no smash attacks, no board drops, no flying off the screen. The only thing that is similar is the 2D design in which that’s not similar either. Sure seeing 4 characters fighting on the screen evokes the “Smash Familiars” but does that make it smash? Nope.

The game is Combo heavy and Super’s execute their kills. And when their hit they disintegrate. Come on guys can we quite with the BS I have to call X a ripoff because I like Y? It’s really unfitting towards your personalities. Make’s for little diversity in the gaming community XD

    #42 3 years ago
  43. Charlie Sheen

@42 ok then every cod is different then, different guns, campaign, camos on guns, different maps, character design and different spec ops/zombies…… just because they have changed minor things its still going to feel like cod and thats going to be the same for this mess of a game and whats funny is that i remember most sony fanboys saying that ssb is a kiddie fighting game but its mature as hell when sony make it….

    #43 3 years ago
  44. ManuOtaku

I dont mind if it borrows some elements from super smash brother, and i think that is quite good, becuase developers always have to look and / or aim at the greatest games, and i think smash is a great game, therefore if they took some things that is really great.

What i dont like is the attitude of some gamers that criticize and/or indicate that smash brothers is a kiddie game, that is not their kind of game, basecally they dont like it because is a nintendo tittle, but when something similar or in the same vein arrives in their predilected system, then turns out that is the greates thing ever, that is what i dont understand, ***scratchs head***, dont get me wrong, iam glad that you will be receiving this kind of game on your predilected console, and i will be getting this also, as i got SSMB, but please restrain from trashing the nintendo tittle at the same time, it doesnt look coherent IMHO.

    #44 3 years ago
  45. lexph3re

There’s a difference in a feel and the general execution. Your comparison used the same game and made a statement as if it we’re suppose to be different. CoD isn’t suppose to differ by much as the sss(super smash series) isn’t suppose to differ by much. This on the other hand has a completely different feel to it and brand new in some respects. And as all the preview videos state it DOES NOT FEEL LIKE SMASH.

And I am often called a Sony fanboy(which im not they just deliver the things i want) and I played Smash competitively with friends and tourneys and know the game had a great meta game level to it and still does (not so much brawl). So your generalizing statement kinda eludes the perspective I’m tackling by stating this game is obviously going to be different from smash

@47: Opponents not defeated by Ring outs and instead defeated by Super Moves which are charged by attacks,
A level that gets built as you play on it, promptly followed by a section where you have to answer questions while fighting or you’ll be clocked by the level.

I don’t see the problem in being a SSB clone, Hudsonsoft did one first, plus we’ve also had a TMNT one and a Cartoon Network one. What does it matter that Sony are doing one as well? As far as I can tell, you’re dredging up a similar argument to that what you’re complaining about Sony fanboys calling SSB kiddy (something I have never done, had a lot of fun with SSB).
You’re on the outside looking in, and as it’s Sony you’re bitching about them doing their own take on a particular ip. If they want to have a crack, let them. If you don’t want it, don’t buy it. No-one’s making you, you know?

@53: And the original Call of Duty was just like Medal of Honor, EAs UFC game is just like THQs, BlazBlue is just like StreetFighter, Soul Calibur is just like Battle Arena Toshinden, Full Auto is just like Twisted Metal, Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi is just like a steaming pile of dog shit.
Wherever you look ther are games cribbing on other games’ style, does it matter? Not at all. Every company is entitled to produce their own version of something (as I said in a previous post where I mentioned Hudsonsoft, Cartoon Network and TMNT super Smash Bros clones, which you just happened to ignore).

So, come on, be a big boy and say something that actually makes sense, instead of just going ‘Boooo, Sony ripping SSB. Shitty Sony. Booooo!’. It’s not very becoming.

I loved Super Smash Brothers as a kid, and loved Super Smash Brothers Melee even more, and I have no problem with Playstation All Stars Battle Royale reminding me of those days, playing Super Smash Brothers with either my friends or my siblings. Because what I saw last night was a fighting game that actually looks like a lot of fun to play, and nothing but the highest amount of promise to it. Though to be more specific, what I saw when this was on GameTrailers earlier this morning, was a very interesting fighting game that blends the zoomed out camera style, levels that can play a combat role, and weapons of SSB and SSBM (with the weapons having a Playstation twist), with the supers and ultra combos of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and even some of the close quarters combat style of the Tekken characters from Street Fighter X Tekken. Here’s my questions to anyone, HOW IS THIS BAD, AND HOW IS IT BAD THAT A FIGHTING GAME THAT’S MEANT TO BE FUN COPIES SUPER SMASH BROTHERS!? “Oh boo fuckin hoo, they ripped off Nintendo, they should be sued”. Here’s a slap of reality for everyone out there, it’s as a wise man once said “No Idea’s Original, there’s nothin new under the sun, it’s never been what it’s been, but how it’s done”.
I look forward to hearing more about this, and can’t wait to see who else is making the roster for PSAS: Battle Royale.

People, sometimes rip-offs are a good thing for the consumer. I don’t understand the arguing here. I’m still wishing someone would rip off the 3D Zelda model using the Move controller on PS3 in a killer app kinda way. (note i’m also a fan of 3D Dot Game Heroes, but looking for HD 3D Zelda rip off)

But seriously, back to my original question in #59. They’d be fools not to include these Sony characters. Oh wait, they’ll probably charge extra for them as “DLC”….

    #62 3 years ago
  63. monkeygourmet

Was looking at people’s comments earlier but had not yet checked out the footage….

Jesus Christ, that is the worst rip off piece of shit I’ve seen in a while. If someone had said some weird Chinese black market company had made this people would have cried rip-off… The fact this is official is a complete joke.

Nintendo should sue seven shades of shit outta Sony for this. It’s not just another fighting game, it IS super smash brothers. I honestly couldn’t tell the difference at a glance.

I mean, check out the developers diary of dishonoured. The guy saying he deliberately tried to avoid any other enetertainment product when trying to create an original art style.

There’s one thing getting subconsciously influenced, it’s entirely another to copy something outright!

Rare should defo be working in their rip-off SSB… MS have plenty of characters to fill a roster.

You get 4 or 5 from Halo easy, from Master Chief to the Covenant. Chuck in a bug robot from that big robot game they had. Kameo and Blinx. Some girls from the Dead or Alive games… Conner the Squirrel dude, the pilot from Crimson Skies, Joanna Dark and erm… Well you get the idea…

It could have Kinnect controls AND a dance game!! It’d sell lot hot cakes mate, trust me :-)

@69 You talk about copycat and then promote Gianna Sisters? FAIL.

For those predictably knee-jerk reacting from glancing at a video, you want to read the first-hand previews from people that have actually played the game and spent time with its combat system. Seems like they’ve found plenty of differences in what’s been shown off so far.

    #71 3 years ago

That was a joke. I forgot most people on forums have Aspergers syndrome and fail to spot sarcasm and irony very easily…

If you would care to pick apart my list further you will see games icons listed from various companies who no longer exist so there is no real worry of this game being created…

Also, I’ll call it now…. This game will be shit.

I don’t see how listening to a few neck beards opinions who have been plied with free booze from the company who have been developing the game is going to sway my gut instincts. This game looks shocking, no two ways about it….

You gotta have SOUL, something Nintendo games generally have in bucket loads. This smacks of dirty whoreish corporate bullshit….

You guys sound like a bunch of fucking whiny kids! If you don’t like it then don’t buy it. You sound so bitter, just shut the fuck up and go away with your bullshit. It comes down to the fact that playstation fans want this game, smash bros was a good game so obviously sony have taken from that. If sony made something totally different you would all say it was shit. They copied a winning formula, they would be stupid not to. Nintendo will not sue them, you fucking idiots.

    #78 3 years ago
  79. monkeygourmet

@77 in what ways did they describe the ‘mechanics’ to be in anyway different to smash brothers?

What’s the new ‘hook’? The whole point of making new fighting games was to add a slightly new spin on things:

    Mortal Kombat, fatalities
    Streetfighter X Tekken, gems
    Dead or Alive, reversals etc…

What is new here compared to smash brothers? Please provide me with links

    #79 3 years ago
  80. monkeygourmet

    @78

Get fucked with your, if you don’t like it, don’t buy it bullshit… Thats the most lazy arguement to anything, sequels, dlc etc… You seriously want lazy cash ins like this?!

It just easy and cheap for Sony to develop stuff like this…

Let’s just face it, I own all 3 consoles and Nintendo is clearly the company everyone else copies…

    #80 3 years ago
  81. nikk900

@80 Why do you care? Seriously, why? What dose it matter if this is like smash bros? Smash bros had nintendo characters. This is similar, but with playstation characters. That is the obvious big difference. Who gives a shit if it looks the same as a game on a different console, with different characters?

    #81 3 years ago
  82. Gekidami

Yeah, its easy and cheap for Sony to develop a new game in a genre they’ve never done before using a brand new studio, making a game totally from the ground up. *rolls eyes*

    #82 3 years ago
  83. nikk900

@80 You have anger issues, clearly. Maybe take a few breaths and let your fanboy rage cool down. I also own all three consoles, and I don’t care who copies who. So long as I like it.

    #83 3 years ago
  84. monkeygourmet

    @82

Its not a risky project. It’s directly copying a tried and tested formular. It’s an easy sell considering its not really a new ip. So yes, considering those factors, it is cheap and easy for Sony.

    @81

I don’t like it because it lacks imagination and soul. If I see anything that proves otherwise I’ll happily change my mind but from what I’ve seen this just looks plain bad.

Why are you getting so defensive, I’m mainly attacking the developers for producing what I think Is a cynical marketing cash in

@84 You say you hate the developers for “cashing in”? Playstation fans have wanted this for a long time. It’s one of the most requested games to sony. Giving the fans what they want, what a bunch of bastards. I’m not being defensive, I just saw this game and got amped as it’s something I’ve wanted to see for a long time and I just see comments like yours full of unnecessary negativity, and it annoys me.

    #89 3 years ago
  90. Gekidami

    @84
Ironically a lack of risk and only using ‘tried & tested formulas’ is a perfect description of everything Nintendo releases.

Some more irony; you saying others are being defensive when you seem to be the most enraged person here. Dont like it? play something else. Its not like Sony have a lack of other PS3 games on the way.

The game is being made due to fan demand, accept it. No other dev is looking at what the fans want and are commissioning new studios to makes new games from the ground up. Are we really going to complain about this? I mean, fuck new content? Really?

    #90 3 years ago
  91. monkeygourmet

    @89

That was copy and pasted off one of your opening sentences actually… Insert credit, try again…

Look, I honestly didnt think anyone would request this kind of game from Sony. My bad if I’m wrong, it is literally the last thing myself or anyone I know ho owns a ps3 would be waiting for but maybe there is a market for it.

For me, Sony’s franchise characters just dont have enough history or love behind them compared to something like Nintendos games have.

    #91 3 years ago
  92. monkeygourmet

    @90

Nintendo can get away with this a little more since they are purely a games company and have invented most fun innovations in gaming in the last 20 years.

They still release some cash in shit though.

But, mario galaxy, skyward sword, mario kart, pikmin, star fox, wave race, f zero, etc etc…. Please find better examples of these type of games

    #92 3 years ago
  93. Gekidami

^ Special pleading isnt cool. Oh and please, unless its something like Wii fit, Nintendo stopped being innovative a long time ago. The last original franchise they made was Pikmin on Gamecube, Sony on the other hand… Drop the act, most people here arent blinded by the nostalgia Nintendo lives off.

    #93 3 years ago
  94. monkeygourmet

In what way is PS allstars part of this strategy? This is jut a rinse and repeat job and you know it. Same as crash bandicoot platformer and kart vs. mario kart and mario 64, move & kinect vs. wii remote, all handhelds vs. gameboy, the list goes on and on…

The wii is my most least played console, but, we all know, when Nintendo get it right, no one even comes close…

Forza 4 is a good example of copying an existing game and bringing new unique features thus leaving Gran Turismo behind.

Do you think ps allstars will achieve that over smash brothers? Good luck with that….

    #94 3 years ago
  95. Gekidami

Point being, Sony also release original games on the side, Nintendo stopped long ago. Why shouldnt they do more traditional stuff too?
But whatever buddy, you’re clearly deep in this whole ‘Nintendo did everything first’ mentality. Just do us all a favour and live your delusion else where. I’m just glad you have no say in how games are made, otherwise most of them wouldnt exist, especially in the fighting genre; We’d only have Street Fighter as a 2D fighter or whatever the very first one was because they’re all based off that one original model, and Virtua Fighter or whatever for 3D ones. Actually Smash Bros wouldnt exist either, because Nintendo didnt invent mascot fighting games, cross over fighting games nor did they even invent the type of gameplay we see in SSB.

    #95 3 years ago
  96. monkeygourmet

Have you even seen Nintendos eshop offerings? Thars originality in them thar hills too…

Look, fighters megamix aside, tell me another fighting game that took a selection of different mascot fighters, developed their unique fighting styles, added fan service (collectables, trophies etc…), added 4 player and online modes, added character specific levels, an easy to play yet deep combat system..?

I can only think of two, smash brothers and this…

What delusion do you think I live in? A world where games aren’t bullshit cash ins and contain some form of character and soul. Id rather that than get force fed shite anyday… I love lots of different styles of games, I’m just not afraid on calling out stuff that looks bad either…

Hopefully Sony’s able to secure the rights for Spyro & Crash from ActiVision for this game. They really did define the original PlayStation back in the day & were the unofficial mascots. If not Spyro (I’d imagine he’d be difficult to design for) then at the very least Crash.
