Wii U, 3DS link key to new Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai is going to do something different with the next entry in the series.

Speaking to IGN via email, Sakurai noted that he can't rely on just adding new content for the next Smash Bros. release.

"There is a certain dead end we come to if we just expand the volume of the game," he said.

"I intend to change direction a little as we go."

This new direction has something to do with the twin platform release.

"The key to that's going to be its dual support for 3DS/Wii U," Sakurai said, but didn't give further details.

"I'm really just getting started on this so it's going to take time, but I'll come up with something that uses that link as the game's central axis, so I hope you're looking forward to it."

We've heard very little about the new game's development so far; Sakurai's comments suggest we won't get an E3 2012 reveal.

Thanks, GoNintendo.
