Steam to arrive on Linux “in the coming months”

Wednesday, 25th April 2012 13:32 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

It looks as though Steam, may be finally coming to Linux. According to a post on NeoGAF, Michael Larabel, a software engineer and technology analyst, paid Valve a visit yesterday and was told the digital service would be available for the operating system soon. Larabel’s report today states it will be released on the system in “the coming months,” and the firm is working on Linux-compatible titles, but that Steam itself is coming to the platform. You can read more through the links. Thanks, ChristopherJack.

As I’ve stated long ago: perhaps the OS behind a potential Valve console. Could finally be another chance to put Linux on the map like Android has.

@3, Well that’s the big question, many Windows games already work on Linux using certain programs like Wine.

Fantastic news. The simple fact that the service will be available to Linux users should encourage devs to create native apps. The only issue is linux’s iffy video card drivers.

Even if we only get to play Source games and these indie titles that already got Linux versions it’s still a big deal.

If Valve can show there’s a market then other Devs and Pubs will start to take notice. The number of Mac ports has risen sharply since Steam went there, true we’re only talking a very minor %age of new releases, but one step at a time, eh?
