Ghost Recon Online is free-to-play "research" for Ubisoft

Ubisoft is dipping its toe into free-to-play waters with Ghost Recon Online, the PC-exclusive freemium shooter due in June alongside big brother Future Soldier.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Ghost Recon Online creative director Jean-Marc Geoffrey said Ubisoft needs to experiment in the free-to-play sphere.

"We need to learn how it works: how to make free-to-play successful. Maybe even with consoles," he admitted.

"We don't know how the future will pan out, the business is changing. It's business design research."

Ghost Recon Online is due in mid-June, as is the PC version of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, which arrives on consoles in May. A Wii U version of the game is also expected, but has not been detailed.

Thanks, Gamefront.
