Sony files domain registration for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

Saturday, 21 April 2012 21:25 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

More evidence of a Smash Bros-like title in the works at Sony called PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale surfaced thanks to a domain registration dug up by PlayStation Lifestyle.

According to what the site found, Sony has registered the web address playstationallstarsbattleroyale.com, and the registration data shows the following:

Registrant:

Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC
919 E Hillsdale Blvd
Foster City, CA 94404
US

Domain Name: PLAYSTATIONALLSTARSBATTLEROYALE.COM

Earlier this month, PlayStation Lifestyle were handed a survey circulated by Sony regarding the title PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Back in November last year, Superbot was working on a project codenamed “Title Fight” and a leaked image of Sweet Tooth as he would appear in the game accompanied the rumor.

This could be the title Keighley was on about earlier on Twitter. Then again, Sony could be waiting until E3 to reveal more on the game.

We’ll send a mail.

True. the Playstation All-star part seems really lame but to be fair, that reminds a lot of people (Or at least me) of the awesome movie / book by the same name and this game simply won’t be able to compete with awesomeness of that bloody, crazy work.

This sounds sick one the few games I actually liked on the Wii was Smash Bro’s a game like that for the PS3 except with Sony Stars would be sick if the fight mechanics are right.

    #6 3 years ago
  7. Clupula

I just hope that it plays like an actual fighting game and NOT like Smash Brothers, which is more a casual party game.

If Sony are smart, they’ll do something that actually appeals to the fighting game community. Something like Street Fighter IV. Easy to learn, a lifetime to master, type thing.

    #7 3 years ago
  8. The_Red

    @7
Actually, if Sony are smart, they’ll go the SSB way. Seriously, sales of all deep fighters combined (including SF4) don’t even begin to reach SSB numbers.

Plus, SSB games aren’t too casual. They’re not deep as a real fighter but still…
Of course personally I have the same hope as you and wish to see an actual, relatively deep fighting game as you suggested but we know that even with SF4, MK9, KOF13 and BlazBlue doing good, the fighting market is still not big enough and Sony definitely wants SSB numbers from a game with all their mascots.

if they are clever they´ll go the ssb path. it´s a great game. sony has so many cool mascots. kratos fighting clank, sir daniel fortesque fighting victor sullivan. all awesome…but it would suck if all this would be mk or tekken style. it should be presented in a funny way and not too serious imo. doesn´t mean that the gameplay has to suffer from a presentation like this.
ssb is deeper than many people think. they wont copy it anyway but i would love to see it going in this direction.

    #9 3 years ago
  10. Christopher Jack

I’d rather the SSB way, would be too difficult for more than 2 players at once in the traditional Street Fighter/Tekken way. Though I’d like to see much more depth to the environments than the overly cartooney SSB ones.

  11. OlderGamer

So let me get this straight. Nintendo games suck. They aren’t real games for real gamers. They are casual crap. Complete waste of time.

And yet once again Someone else is trying to replicate and copy the experience found in a Nintendo franchise?

Can’t have it both ways can we?

Just give in to your inner child and play SSB. And Mario Kart, and … oh right , nvm. Those aren’t real games. I forgot.

  12. Aimless

I think people are getting too hung up on Smash Bros. when clearly this game would be better off taking lessons from Powerstone. There’s nothing else quite like it available, and Capcom don’t seem to have any interest in reviving the series.

Also, I still think the name is diabolical. Title Fight was far less on the nose.

SSB is a real game and awesome one at that. That has nothing to do with the inner child. Is SSB a real and deep fighter? No. That’s what it’snot.

As for Mario Kart, it is just the rehash of SNES classic. It was great back then but the formula hasn’t changed a bit. That’s why Mario Kart 9 or 7 or whatever is just crap. SSB Melee though… that is a REAL, awesome game even if it’s not a deep fighter.

Nope, obv not more. Besides the comparison is irrelevant, that’s a different topic entirely. The fact that you brought that up is ironically telling, really. Playstation basically doesn’t have any mascots.

It would be incredibly easy to populate a PlayStation-centric roster of fighters.

You have the no-brainer first-party characters — Kratos, Nathan Drake, Sweet Tooth, Ratchet & Clank, Sackboy, etc — but there’s also a lot of scope for representing third-party exclusive series — like Kazuma from Yakuza or part of the Persona cast — and those who have simply been synonymous with PlayStation in the past, like Lara Croft or Heiachi.

    Mario Kart isn´t crap – it´s fantastic!

Sony has some truly awesome mascots. some are even close to nintendos iconic mascots!

the master chief counts at least for 10 mascots!

    #23 3 years ago
  24. Erthazus

@22, more is not exactly “Famous mascots”. Sony have for example Baseball game, so each character we can name as a mascot?

True Sony mascots that people like from Sony and recognise them as true mascots are probably Kratos, Nathan Drake, Ratchet, Clank, Solid Snake (MGS4 is still a major exclusive at some point), Sweet Tooth, maybe Cloud from FF7 or some characters from FF8, Sackboy, Jak, Dexter, Cole MacGrath and probably that’s it.

Of course Crash and Spyro, but Sony obviously killed them.

@Polygem, “the master chief counts at least for 10 mascots!”

as being dumb character that barely can speak decent words and that wear stupid green armor? Come on.

    #24 3 years ago
  25. Gekidami

^ The majority of franchises Sony own are ones with usable characters for a game like this (the same cant be said for MS’ owned IP’s), not all but the vast majority. And why do they have to only be “famous mascots”? What does that even mean? Are the Ice Climbers “famous mascots”? How about Game & Watch, or all of the random Pokémon besides Pikachu? ROB? I doubt the majority of people who played Brawl even knew what that was.

Fact is, most of the characters in Smash Bros arent exactly ‘famous’ and are far from being ‘mascots’. It seems the rule is characters from that publishers owned IP’s, and in that regard Sony has plenty, more than Nintendo, thats for sure.

And Sony never owned the Spyro & Crash IP’s.

    @Geki,
“And Sony never owned the Spyro & Crash IP’s.”

I said about characters that are recognized by the Playstation Brand. It does not matter what they own.

“And why do they have to only be “famous mascots”? ”

Because that’s the whole point. Mascots is a huge seller.
If they are not famous, then Microsoft can do the same thing and create it’s own fighting title by using Cortana, Chief, some cat from Kinect title…

    #28 3 years ago
  29. OlderGamer

Might wanna keep in mind that there are two or three layers of viable mascots here.

    First are headliners:

Mario, Luigi, Kirby, Donky Kong, etc

    Then there are secondary ones:

Didy Kong, The Fzero guy, Kupa, Zelda(not link), etc

And then there are spice ones, ones that are thrown in for variety and uniquness:

    Pokemon, Bosses, ice climbers, etc

I would imagine that Sony would do the same type of thing.

Players buy the game for the headliners, but you need teir two and three to flesh out the game. A game like this works best with 35plus chars/mascots. So there have to be alot more then just headliners, but that is ussualy all people focus on when thinking about line ups.

    #29 3 years ago
  30. Christopher Jack

Hmm,lets try to make a list of who we all expect (or hope) to see in this potential title.
Nathan Drake, Cole MacGrath, Kratos, Sweet Tooth, Ratchet, Clank, Sly Cooper, Jak, Daxter, Sackboy, PaRappa, Nariko, Nathan Hale, Joseph Capelli, Sevchenko, Sir Daniel Fortesque…
They’re the only Sony owned protagonists I could imagine Sony using, some like PaRappa I doubt will make it, then you have 3rd party characters like Snake & Ezio who I imagine being large possibilities. The rest will likely be antagonists filling up the rest of the list. Maybe even basic soldiers like the Helghast & Chimera will show up as filler for the campaign mode in between boss fights.

    #30 3 years ago
  31. Clupula

I wouldn’t expect the title to only have main characters. From Infamous, for example, you could probably put about three or four characters, with Cole being the main, but you could also put in Kuo, Kessler, and Nyx. No one makes a fighting game with just the mains, Jesus, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 would’ve had 10 characters and Street Fighter X Tekken would’ve had four.

As long as the characters are relevant enough to the plot that people who played that game would recognize them, they’re fair game. You could probably make a 50 character Playstation fighting game, easily.

But back to my original point, I don’t want to see this play like Smash Brothers. That would be lame. Power Stone on the other hand, or even Dissidia? That would be acceptable.

    #31 3 years ago
  32. Clupula

As far as characters go, I know it’s a forgotten franchise, but I really hope there are some Heavenly Sword characters in this. They would lend themselves so well to a fighting game.

    #32 3 years ago
  33. Clupula

Also, as far as Sony ripping off Nintendo, unless it plays like Smash Brothers, they aren’t. People forget that Nintendo were not the first company to release a franchise crossover fighter. Smash Brothers came out in 1999, but Sega released Fighters Megamix in 1996 for the Saturn, which I should note played like a standard 3D fighter.

So, it’s the gameplay that’ll determine whether they’re stealing from Nintendo or not.

Plus, you have to remember that the majority of Sony’s franchises are aimed at teens to adults. Games like Ratchet & Clank aren’t Sony’s bread winners. It’s M-rated God of War and T-rated Uncharted. Nintendo’s franchises are mostly aimed at families and children, so you’d have to keep a Nintendo fighting game as simple as possible to reach the audience who are excited about those characters. With Playstation characters, because the audience is older, you can make it slightly more complicated. Now, you can’t go Street Fighter III on it or Tekken because those are too complicated and you only get the hardcore fighting audience.

But if you go Street Fighter/current Mortal Kombat, you can get both the fighting community, which is on PS3 more than any other current console, and the casual audience who just see Kratos and Drake and want them to fight. Going too simple turns off the fighting game community and a lot of your audience. Going too complex turns off the casuals. The SF (or as was suggested above, Power Stone) route solves this problem.

    #33 3 years ago
  34. Christopher Jack

Things get too complicated when you start naming all the NPC’s so I just stuck to the basics, would love to see Kessler & John White but they’re too difficult to simply label as antagonist or protagonist because it really depends on your point of view.

As far as third party characters go, I don’t think there will be that many. Maybe five at the most. And I don’t see Ezio making that list as he’s never been seen as just a Playstation character.

On the other hand, I have 360 owning friends who still don’t know that the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection came to their system, so I would say Solid Snake, or at the very least, Old Snake would make sense. Cloud from FF7. Maybe Sephiroth. Maybe some FFX characters. Old school Dante from Devil May Cry, even though DMC4 was multiplatform and so is the collection.

I don’t see, say, the Persona characters, simply because that’s not mainstream enough to attract attention. I mean Disgaea has never been on any console but Playstation but I don’t see anybody buying this to play as Laharl, you know?

But the bigger budget PS1/PS2/PS3 third party exclusives? I can see a couple characters coming from them.

The majority, I think, will be secondary characters. I mean if you’re getting Nathan Drake, why wouldn’t you also want Chloe in there?

@36 – It would be awesome if they included White Knight Chronicles and Rogue Galaxy characters, but if this is Western developed, I don’t see them making it. I don’t think Arc the Lad characters really have that much of a chance, even if it was Japanese developed. The series kinda died with its PS2 entries.

  40. Da Man

    Gekidami you pathetic devotee.

None of those are mascots. Think about that.

Good grief.. have you even played most of the games on that list you took the time to copynpaste? Alundra.. Arc The Lad.. Brings back memories, bad ones. You really live for SCEE, don’t you? But I digress.

    #40 3 years ago
  41. Da Man

Oh, and Lara Croft has never ever been synonymous with PS, it was a computer game, with the exception of 2 and 3 all being ported on all platforms simultaneously.

Sticky jumps on the other hand..

Releasing a game on a Sony console doesn’t make any of it’s characters PS symbol, hero, star or mascot.

If Kevin Butler is a char I will buy it.

    #42 3 years ago
  43. Clupula

You know, Kevin Butler would be an awesome hidden character or hidden boss.

    #43 3 years ago
  44. Christopher Jack

@43, No, he’d be THE Boss!

    #44 3 years ago
  45. Gekidami

    @39
It’ll be interesting to see how the dev being western does indeed affect the choice of characters. We can assume it’ll come out in Japan too, so does that mean it’ll have Toro in it? It’s actually Playstations Mascot in Japan so you’d think it would be a non-brainer, but then it’s pretty much totally unknown in the west…

    #45 3 years ago
  46. Da Man

Kevin Butler is a Sony executive VP of BS Department.

Ken Kutaragi is a mascot. Well, was.

I think they should include Cell Processor and CD-ROM as tier 1 characters.

    #46 3 years ago
  47. Clupula

@45 – I’m still surprised that Toro made the Western version of SFXT, to be honest.

But yeah, I think it being a Western developed game will rule out some characters that would’ve been there had it been Japanese developed. I mean, Sony own the rights to some awesome characters and as much as I’d love to see, say, Wild Arms characters show up, I don’t think there’s much of a chance of that. Not that it’ll be 100% Western in character, but I think only the more popular, bigger-budget Japanese titles like maybe Shadow of the Colossus, will get mention.

@44 – It would really depend on how crazy-meta they want the story to be. I mean, you could make a huge somewhat adult satire of the whole idea of a crossover fighting game and in that case, Kevin Butler would be the perfect last boss.

    #47 3 years ago
  48. Erthazus

@Gekidami, you probably sleep with playstation. Seriously.

You even have names from games that will come in the future (Starhawk) and that never had the opportunity to sell more then 100-200K copies.

    #48 3 years ago
  49. Clupula

@48 – Starhawk comes out next month. Unless this game is announced to come out tomorrow, it would no longer be a game from the future.

    #49 3 years ago
  50. Clupula

Not to mention, using a crossover game to promote a future title wouldn’t exactly be unprecedented. Soul Calibur IV’s use of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed’s Apprentice comes to mind, immediately, even though SCIV came out four or five months before the Force Unleashed.

  51. Bojangles

If I were making a combat game based of A+ class platform trolls then this ‘discussion’ would make it easy pickings to build a character roster from.
