Bethesda: Prey 2 not canned, but it won’t make 2012

Thursday, 19th April 2012 15:03 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Bethesda’s confirmed that Prey 2 hasn’t been cancelled contrary to previous speculation, but has said it won’t meet its planned 2012 release due to it not meeting the publisher’s “quality standards”.

Prey 2 has not been killed, publisher Bethesda confirmed today, confirming the Human Head shooter is still in the works.

It follows a previous rumour which claimed the game was canned.

Bethesda’s now confirmed that isn’t the case, but has said it won’t now meet a promised 2012 launch due to it currently not passing its “quality standards”.

“Development of Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned,” said Bethesda in a statement sent to VG247.

“The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want.

“We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.”

Prey 2 was unveiled last March for PS3, 360 and PC. The game was shown behind closed doors numerous times to press, including the publisher’s pre-E3 event in Utah last April, E3 itself, QuakeCon and gamescom, as well as public showings at PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo.

Bethesda’s main focus for this year will now be Skyrim DLC and Arkane’s Dishonored, which got its debut trailer earlier this week. That’ll release on PS3, 360 and PC.

“the game does not currently meet our quality standards”
WTF are they talking about? Mediocre like Hunted and RAGE have passed their standards but one of the most impressive games of E3 2011 (Prey 2) hasn’t!?

Finally some info,I can live with the delay as long as they stick to this “delayed to 2013 not canned” statement and actually release it…and if they don’t… http://phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Simpsons-Angry-Mob.png .

As a PS3 User Im “happy”, because 2012 releases are really overweight after the Summer.

But man… What a shoot in the head we have eluded.

Good point. The game was probably too good for them.

Alas, I just hope they don’t ruin the Dishonored.

I loved the first Prey game, its game play was awesome with the wall walking aspect and the spiritual side of things was a neat idea. The alien design were great too as they looked like Predators. The guns were extremely imaginative in their design and how they looked on screen too was awesome. The portal shifting mechanic was also great too it made for some real stomach churning moments as the game world and level design defied gravity and physics.

However, this sequel did NOT impress me too much. Yeah sure the E3 video looks great, but it was CGI and they can make any CGI trailer look good. However, it just looks too much like a drift away from the current Prey formula, I want a true sequel. I want to follow Tommy and see what happens to him after he enters that portal at the end of the first game with that tribal women (spoiler for anyone who has not completed it lol). Thats the sequel I want, not some completely new story and game that just uses the Prey name to try and get its foot on the ladder without even trying.

I hope this dev time is to completely redo the game and bring back Tommy, and make a true fan sequel and to expand on what made the first game so great.

gameplay looks awesome. But somehow the conversation on the gameplay tactics remind me of the interviews for dishonored … Is *that* the reason for the delay?

They have a really intriguing concept wrapped around this one, and my curiosity has been piqued by it.

Puh, that’s good news i guess. I hope they do revamp the environments though, not too much, i don’t want it to lose it’s blade runner feel. But from what i’ve seen the world just looks the same on every screenshot.

“and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.”

    “compromise our quality standards”

    “quality standards.”

    Thanks Bethesda,i’m reassured.

    @13 & @16

This I did not know, only thought it was CGI they showed.

Looks good from what I can see, and nice to hear Tommy will be back too :)

So is it supposed to follow on from the first then and is Tommy the lead playable character?

    Uhmmmm…

‘Prey 2 developer hasn’t worked on the game since November – report
Human Head apparently downed tools over ZeniMax contract dispute.

Prey 2 developer Human Head hasn’t worked on the game since February due to a contract dispute with publisher ZeniMax, according to an inside source.

Shack News’ anonymous informant claims that the studio deliberately stopped development late last year while attempting to negotiate more favourable terms with Bethesda’s parent company.
Many of the game’s development staff were subsequently laid off, in the hope that they would be re-hired when the contract problems had been ironed out.

There was apparently some positive forward momentum until January at which point ZeniMax all but broke of communication with the studio.
The source added that there was then some additional progress in late February but things “soured” on 2nd March, from which point hence they can provide no additional first-hand information.

Immediately following Bethesda’s announcement this morning that the game had been delayed, Eurogamer asked the publisher if Human Head is still working on the title. A spokesperson replied that it wasn’t willing to comment further on the game at this time.

Its original statement claimed that Prey 2 has been pushed back because “development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards.”

“We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want,” it continued.

“We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.”

Last month Interscope founder Brian Fargo singled out ZeniMax in a rant about poor treatment of developers by publishers, specifically its decision not to pay Fallout: New Vegas studio Obsidian a bonus because the game received an 84 point Metacritic average rather than 85.’
