EVE Online's PLEX for Cards scheme immediately sold out

CCP's trial run offering nVidia GeForce GTX 560 in exchange for virtual currency was a roaring success.

Ausgamers reports that all 100 of the graphics cards offered in the first trial were snapped up within 64 seconds of launch earlier this week.

The scheme allowed players to trade 20 units of PLEX for the GPU, which included the cost of shipping. CCP and nVidia indicated more hardware could be offered if the scheme was a success.

PLEX is a strange sort of quasi currency which players can trade in-game - and even ship around, risking its loss should the transport unit be damaged - but which represents subscription to the game itself. As such, players can purchase PLEX with real money direct from CCP, or trade for it with ISK earned in-game.

Earning enough ISK can be pretty boring, but some people like that sort of thing, making PLEX an effective tool against illegitimate gold farming.
