Warren Spector: "Next-gen consoles 'aren't the answer"

Deus Ex and Epic Mickey creator Warren Spector feels the power boost of updated hardware isn't the answer to many common problems faced by game developers.

Spector told EDGE that most of the problems faced by developers are creative.

"If it comes it comes; when it comes, it comes," he said of new hardware.

"I'm not a tech guy, particularly. I'm a design, story, character guy. I think most of the problems we have to solve are creative ones, not technical ones.

"Obviously we make software, so there's always a technical element to what we do, but I will make games that do whatever I want them to do at the end of the day, and I will use whatever technology [is] available."

Spector's comments are in stark contrast to what other developers have said recently. Many other developers have expressed hopes that Sony and Microsoft's next consoles will be more open development platforms solving many of the current development hurdles they face.

VG247 was told earlier today that the next Xbox will feature in-built Kinect and Blu-ray functionality, will require an always-on internet connection and will release in Christmas 2013.

Our sources also told us that Sony is aiming to release the next PlayStation console before the Xbox 720 next Christmas, and that certain developers have been invited to reveal meetings in the US in May and June.
