Final Fantasy Versus XIII lives in new Theatrhythm DLC

Japanese Final Fantasy fans will finally be able to get their hands on at least a little piece of Final Fantasy Versus XIII after six years of waiting – in the form of a downloadable piece of music for rhythm title Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy.

The game’s theme song – “Somnus” by Kingdom Hearts composer Yoko Shimomura – is to appear in the 3DS rhythm title as part of an upcoming downloadable update. It’ll be accompanied by “Battle Theme” from FFVI, “Dark Messenger” from FFIX and “Magicians’ Tower” from FFII.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII is the latest title from Tetsuya Nomura, creator of both the Kingdom Hearts series and many of Final Fantasy’s most recognizable characters including Final Fantasy VII’s cast. Announced in 2006, little information on the game has escaped Square Enix HQ since then.

Earlier this month Nomura told Famitsu that a proper reveal for the game – at this point six years old – had been held up, but wouldn’t elaborate why. At least this DLC release seems to hint that some sort of plan is ticking over in the background.

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy will launch for the 3DS in the West this Summer.

Thanks, Andriasang.

@#1 Lol why does it matter if it’s PS3 exclusive? It’s not like it’ll take away from the gameplay if it goes multi-platform. Plus that’d be pretty dumb after they made FF13 and FF13-2 on both systems.

@2 Em, it took away from gameplay. Everyone expected huge open world as large as you can fit on blu-ray, and what we got? This particular game should be PS3 exclusive (or they can port it to PC, won’t ruin anything). But no more xbox ports.

You don’t have proof of this. Speculation + fanboyism =/= truth. What people don’t understand is that all the space on the bluray means that the data is not uncompressed so a 20GB game on PS3 is a 12 or less GB game on Xbox 360 due to compression.

One of the reasons why they want it to be PS3 exclusive is because it allows them to use a lot of CG cutscenes in uncompressed format. Quality of these cutscenes will most likely be lower–as it was with XIII–if they port the game to Xbox. And this is not speculation nor fanboyism.

@5, that’s actually fanboyism, because the only reason why SE want this to be exclusive to Ps3 because PS1 and PS2 were popular consoles with 100 million units sold.

Now it’s different and they won’t probably make it exclusive to Sony because developing a game for 6 years is better for both consoles.

@6 I’m actually pretty sure they are porting Versus to Xbox. But Nomura already said he would not endorse it for quality reasons. Nomura also said making the game exclusive was because he wanted to honor his relationships within the industry. So we are both right here.

And don’t call me a fanboy. This is stupid.
