Dark Souls tease seems to point to PC release

Wednesday, 21st March 2012 00:34 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Namco Bandai PR has begun teasing a Dark Souls announcement, and eagle eyed fans think they’ve already figures it out.

As spotted by Neogaf users, the latest edition of Aussie mag PC Power Play is carrying a teaser for next week’s issue with the tagline “You Died”.

The image is highly suggestive of From Software’s dark RPC epic, and coincides with some rampant teasing from Dark Souls publisher Namco Bandai.

In tweets, emails and Facebook messages, Namco’s PR has directed fans to a new app on the Dark Souls Facebook page.

The app shows a wall, which will crumble when enough fans Like it – only about 3,000 have done so at time of writing, with barely a dent made.

Namco Bandai and From Software have both said a PC port could happen if here was enough demand. The survival RPG has since been nominated for numerous awards and sold strongly.

It’s not clear whether the announce is related to a Namco Bandai press event next month.

The PC Power Play tease seems to rule out earlier theories of a DLC expansion; From Software has stated that Dark Souls was complete on release.

Thanks, Kotaku.

I already own it on Xbox but would buy it again on PC just for the mods. Bring it on!

Finally. Still wish they’d released Demon’s Souls for PC first but I guess rights to that aren’t exactly with Namco.
Ok, NO crappy port. This is one game that was always meant for PC and PC RPG fans deserve a decent version and not a rush job like RE4 PC and similar ports.

@5 Yep I don’t need any mods,dx11 nothing just solid control and optimization like Alan Wake.

@5: Forget it, if the console release tells you anything, its that the programmers at FROM SOFTWARE don’t know what the fuck they are doing.

Glad I didn’t cave and get the console version.

@7: Yeah, right. Having a console game played from start to finish with barely no loading screens on sight, tells you *exactly* that…

@9: Never mind all the huge framerate drops. No, never mind that. Which never got fixed btw. They never optimized it for consoles, they never will for PC.

@7 The only noticeable frame drops happened at Blight Town and even then, only for a short section of it. I know it was annoying but other than that, the game was perfectly playable.

If there’s any criticism to be had here, it’s that Dark Souls is not as memorable as Demon’s Souls. Seriously, the Tower (World 3?) of Demon’s was just sublime.

@12: By ‘noticeable’ you mean slide show, right? And no, it would happen all the time, especially if your camera got to close to an enemy. To me it looks like they just refused to do any playtesting. If they are happy with the framerate drops in Areas like Blighttown they don’t deserve to call themselves developers. I’ve seen Alphas that run smoother than that.

It’s an embarrassment and should not have been shipped like that.

Perfectly playable? Must have missed the broken targeting system, which more than once resulted in my character dying. In game there ever hit could be your last, the last thing i want to fight are the controls.

They have a lot to do before they can bring the game to PC. We’ve enough shitty ports already.

@14: Well, so far, I’ve clocked more than 65 hours on the x360 version and the framerate is far from a “slide show”. Sure, the game could use some optimization here and there, but it certainly is not an “embarrassment”. To each his own, I guess…

@14 I guess you must have played a very different version. I’m with #15 on this one. Haven’t quite reached the 100 hour mark of Demon’s because the RPG system and the world didn’t interest me as much but none of things you mention happened to me.

The 5th world of Demon’s Souls DID have a few “Slide show” moments but not Dark Souls. It had noticeable drops but even the worst ones (Near Slide shows) wouldn’t last much. Of course there is no excuse for that but they didn’t hurt the gameplay the way Demon’s did and even then, it was an annoyance at best. I never died because of the frame in either game.

As for targeting system. WTF are you talking about? It WAS NOT broken. The system was designed so you couldn’t auto target an enemy from a long distance and just snipe everything with powerful bows / superspells. This in return would force players to use manual aiming bows so they have better range and targeting as well as forcing them to search for better bows with longer range. Every bow and spell had a different range. Both in effect and in the auto-target icon activation. That’s why you have to choose between different spells like light Soul Arrows and Heavy ones and such. There was a gameplay related difference to range and auto-targeting of a normal magical spell and a pyro type.

(Though to be fair, separating the fire magics from the rest and making a third Pyro class that forces using those fire like hands was a bad decision that didn’t really bring any more depth to the mage type players. We already had different sets of spells and miracles)

@14 Sounds like you couldn’t cut it in Dark Souls and need to bash the game to feel good about yourself. Too many griefers get you down?
