Blizzard still wants to get World of Warcraft running on iPhone

Senior Producer on World of Warcraft John Lagrave has told Eurogamer that the company is still keen to try to make the MMO work on Apple’s industry-changing mobile device.

“Here’s your platform, you’ve got to put an interface, what do you do?” he asked Eurogamer speculatively last week, using his own iPhone as an example.

“So yes we have [looked into mobile] and we always are. Maybe we’ll stumble on the great way to put WOW on the phone – maybe we won’t, but we’re certainly looking into it.”

He goes on to outline how different aspects of World of Warcraft – such as fishing or the upcoming Mists of Pandaria’s expansion’s pet battles – would be more suited to phone-based play than others.

Players can already check the auction house or armoury via phone, but actually playing a version of the game is the next step for the company.

“We won’t do it until we think it’s decent,” he explained. “But it’s interesting and the world is evolving towards that little handheld device – I’d have fun on it, that’s absolutely the case. It would be foolish for any game developer to not be looking at that and we’re not – we don’t think – we’re foolish!”

    They wouldn’t have much luck at all with that unless they cleaned up the classes as I believe they have with druids.

    The problem is is that most classes still require a lot of buttons, it’s not as bad as it was pre-Cataclysm, but you can still have 2-3 bars filled with buttons on a screen. That’s not ideal for a screen as small as an iPhone.

    So they’d need to do skill sanitisation and start dropping useless skills and merging the better ones, so you can have a lesser amount of skills.

    But we all know that’s never going to happen. That would require design sense.

    It doesn´t matter the bottons for the moment, as basically, they have first to see how run the game on the iDevice. Of course, OnLive will be the way I guess, because i´m not seeing anyone installing 20gb on an Ipad only for the original game and two expansions. xD

    But it´s a shame, as only 4G reds will be able in the future to make you play the game everywhere in your hand, as I think, it´s the real point of bringing WOW to these devices. Even Wi-fi won´t be enough for the moment I guess, just seeing what Onlive try to promise and doesn´t really acomplish.

    The real point about the controls it´s hiting Apple in order to establish keyboard/gamepad compatibility (in fact, Blizzard could sell dedicated hardware for WOW´s iDevices). Then we´ll talk about the touch screens bottons.

    the HSDPA network is pretty hardcore already. A while back, all the electricity went out in my city and it’s surroundings for the whole night. The only thing I had left was my laptop on battery and my mobile phone (also on battery). it was in the middle of Madness of deathwing and I wanted to finish it. So I took my phone, tethered it to my laptop and started playing on battery and HSDPA network. I had a reasonable ping (around 150 max. stable around 130) and I could play fairly well.

    In addition, my beautiful Samsung Galaxy S II with a 1.2GHz dualcore is fit to run the mechanics of WoW! How about we strip the game a bit in graphics and run it? :). I’d definitely want that :3.
