Check out some sweet snippets of footage from battles of varying scale in Guild Wars 2.

ArenaNet issued a thank you video to those who signed up for the upcoming beta, but you can watch it too – simply visit the Facebook page and Like Guild Wars 2.

The footage therein shows glimpses of a huge battle; two smaller groups facing off; magic effects filling the air with haze; and a castle under siege, with players fighting across the battlements and siege engines firing.

Guild Wars 2 opened beta sign ups for 48 hours and attracted over 1 million sign ups at a rate of 4,000 per second.

The next beta event is expected this month, with the MMORPG due some time this year.

I really hope this does well.

I’m tired of seeing fantasy presented in the same old boring way (looking at you, Amalur). I like fantasy settings, but it’s FANTASY, and that means you can do all sorts of crazy shit if you want to.

There’s so much in Guild Wars 2 that I’ve never seen the likes of before. There are a few things that worry me, but it’s not enough to offset the massive amounts of excitement I feel over how refreshingly different this is. I’m tired of the same old cloyingly familiar crap.

I’m sick of–because nerds–developers believing that fantasy HAS to be some elven lady with beach ball sized tits and next to no clothing, prancing through fields, and taking out opponents from miles away with an enchanted bow. Fantasy can be so much more than that.

Due to how it’s just become this generic mess, the only fantasy I see in fantasy games any more is perhaps sexual fantasy for those frustrated types out there. The genre is becoming stagnant, the waters are foul, and the taste is stale and tainted.

We need games that try to reinvigorate the genre before it dies off completely.
