Quick Quotes: Some are using piracy as an excuse to “ruin the internet”, says Notch

Thursday, 8th March 2012 17:29 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

“If someone copies your game a trillion times you won’t have a single lost cent. Some people are using that to ruin the internet. I still think piracy is wrong, but [it's on] the level of wrong me calling my friend an idiot. It’s wrong, but it’s such a minor thing. It’s ridiculously small.” – Markus “Notch” Persson to PC Gamer.

Yup. It’s becoming painfully clear now that the big corporations are trying to use piracy as a tool to reap ways to censor their competition.

They’re nowhere near as worried about piracy as they are about both competition and second-hand sales. The thing that seems to worry publishers most is that in this era of the Internet, they’re becoming less and less needed.

    I mean, think about it…

“Hrmn, I can go to a publisher to get some funding for this game,” thinks a small, four man dev team, “or I can go to KickStarter!”

Big publishers absolutely despise the Internet for that reason, and that’s why they bang on about piracy so much. They want to be able to shut down their competition with nonsense reasons, so that everyone has to sell through them.

Piracy is one of the scapegoats they use to achieve Internet control.

So far, their ploys just aren’t working.
