Epic: PC-like performance settings on mobile would be “give power to the user”

Epic believes customer should have performance options on smartphones, which would provide PC-style settings and less disparity in hardware.

Speaking during his GDC lecture “Bringing AAA Graphics to Mobile Platforms”, Epic Games’s senior engine programmer Niklas Smedberg said such an option would be a better solution to performance scaling, especially since mobile “is the new PC” – in terms of GPU, CPU and memory specs, that is.

“On just iOS alone you still have a wide range of different devices and different performances to cover,” he said. “On Xbox 360 you can try and get everything out of the console, but on mobile you have to scale performance for a wide range of device. So, to be future proof, it would be nice to have PC-style settings.”

Such solutions would allow the user to change performance settings to better run their devices, much like PC.

“It would be nice to give the power to the user,” he said.

Agree, except for the “mobile is the new PC” thing.

Forget it. I play games on consoles or phones because I don’t have to decide if I want it to look like crap or play at 2 frames per second. Because I don’t like buying games that say they work on my system and then shelling out hundreds of bucks to make it actually play decently.

It’s not that I can’t do this – I’ve used PCs for over 25 years – but when the user is forced to fiddle with all sorts of minutae just to make it work, the product really comes across as half-finished.
