David Cage waxes rhapsodic on the creation of KARA

Sony has released a video featuring David Cage speaking about KARA, a showcase of development technology which was revealed at GDC yesterday. Watch it below.

According to Cage, since 2005, the team at Quantic Dream have wanted to explore the ability to express emotion in the game engine using real-time 3D. The exploration of the tech using motion capture and other technological advances came to fruition with Heavy Rain.

What the team learned during the development of Heavy Rain, through both success and failure, was that the studio wanted to explore emotions even further and include more of the original performance from the actor using motion capture technology.

In order to accomplish this, the team knew it had to progress on many different levels and one of these was performance capture.

"We knew that if we wanted to move forward and get more quality and more emotion, we would have to start capturing body, face and voice in one take," said Cage noting that in Heavy Rain, all were captured separately and put together - which worked, but the team realized it wanted more.

In order to do this, Quantic Dream invested in more motion capture cameras - Heavy Rain was captured using 28 camera, and with KARA the team bumped it up to 65 cameras.

It's all a very interesting process, and you can listen to the entire interview below.
