Rumour – PlayStation 4 will not use Sony’s Cell Processor

The latest next-gen on dit claims Sony will abandon the Cell line of processors for its next hardware outing.

Kotaku cites industry sources for the news. According to the site, Sony will give up on the Cell architecture entirely rather then produce a follow up to current tech.

Developers have struggled with the unusually engineered Cell chipset since its introduction with the PlayStation 3; in the console’s early years, while middleware was thin on the ground, it was widely criticised. Prehaps as a result, creator Ken Kutaragi’s vision for the chip never quite materialised.

The rumour follows last week’s report that Sony has partnered with AMD for the next PlayStation hardware.

Sony does not comment on rumour or speculation, and has repeatedly stated that it has no plans to announce new hardware any time soon.

I have read this rumor before. If true then I would guess its AMD inside all the way, which means no Nvidia GPU. Unfortunately, it could also mean that Sony would could release a console that is very comparable to what the 360 successor offers, unless they wait a year or so and place a better chip in there.
It will be interesting to see if MS stays with IBM for the CPU, which has cores that were based on the Cell.
(The cell core was based on the Power5 chip I think, the 360 CPU just buffed up 3 of those cores for more of a stand CPU.)

I think we all knew it since the moment some guy said “development for this machine is a [BIG] pain in the ass”.

However, it´s true that Backward Compatibility it´s going to be something I will miss for the rest of my whole life. But… It´s really completely imposible to make any kind of emulation on a PS4? It would be ultra-annoying for Sony, but all this digital releases on PSN/SEN should led to a future when I can play these games on an Certificated Playstation Tablet/Phone, don´t you?

I don’t understand. Why would we expect a console manufacturer to use a chip used in their last system? Did we all faint when Sony announced Playstation 3 without the emotion engine?

Though obviously subsequent SEGA consoles didn’t succeed because they lacked BLAST PROCESSING

good development tools, a good upgrade from last gen = playstation 4.

and please sony, instead of being disrespectful to the competition and putting all these codenames on engines and other shit, just make a machine that developers could possibly enjoy working on and when the console is shown, actually show genuine gameplay and not renders. thanks.

@4 It’s huge because there is now either going to be a shit-ton of work for Sony to do get all the content on PSN compatible with the new system; one which will likely be very different from Cell.

Or they’re just going to forgo PS3/PSN titles working on the new machine completely. Cell is the very basis of PS3/PSN games. Without it, it’s going to pose huge questions for network titles.

#6 Thats the point as Sony have said a lot of times that editing old PSX/PS2 titles in Digital it´s really annoying. Bringing the PS3 Titles now to the platform seems really logic (wasnt last week when GTA IV Complete Edition was launched digitally on PSN?). But whats the point for the future?

A 8 Core Cell must be a hardcore challenge even for Sony devs…

If I could throw some sixth sense into this discussion, I attribute this rumor to one simple philosophy; new console cycle, new design philosophy. Also, I think that the next-gen Playstation will essentially be everything Sony learned from the PS3 (or at least should be) going from the sound of things that’ve recently been rumored. Though I hope that as many here have said, as well as more recently Tim Schaefer, I hope they make it more friendly for developers. Also, just a thought, more Steam integration please.

So the next generation of Consoles are now running watered-down versions of PC hardware? So the consoles are just a cheap PC for people who don’t like PCs. Cool.
