Skyrim gives Remedy “motivation” to continue doing story-driven games

The success of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as a purely story-driven experience has given Remedy plenty of “motivation” to continue down the same path, studio franchise boss Oskari Hakkinen has said.

The exec highlighted the success of Call of Duty and Battlefield as other examples of story-based games working out besides the mammoth Bethesda RPG.

“The Call of Dutys and the Battlefields are doing extremely well in the US,” Hakkinen told Eurogamer. “Those are the type of games that are in popular demand, so it’s really positive to see Skyrim and other RPG games that have a lot of story in be successful as well.

“It gives us motivation to do story-driven games, because there’s obviously an audience out there of people who enjoy story as well.

He continued: “Seeing something like that being successful, we don’t need to consciously try to make our stories any less than they are, not try to make them any simpler. Our stories are not necessarily complicated, but our games are very story heavy. And, just to see games like Skyrim succeed, it’s like, let’s not try to make it any less story-heavy.”

Speaking to VG247 on the launch of the PC version of Alan Wake, Hakkinen said storytelling was “in our DNA”.

Alan Wake PC and Alan Wake’s American Nightmare for Xbox Live Arcade are out now.

Let’s say “singleplayer games” instead of “story-driven”.

To be fair he said “games that have a lot of story” and Skyrim does have a LOT of story.

Yeah idk how you go with Battlefield and Call of Duty over games like BioShock and Mass Effect that are truly story driven shooters and in Mass Effect’s case a shooter-RPG hybrid…
