Sony patent suggests an updated PS Eye may be in the cards

Tuesday, 21st February 2012 18:52 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

A patent filed by Sony in late 2011 for a “User-Drive Three Dimensional Interactive Gaming Environment” has surfaced, and the device appears to be an updated version of PS Eye.

According to the documents dug up by NeoGaf and published by PlayStation Lifestyle, much like Kinect, the camera would be able to track “real-time three-dimensional interactive environment” using the camera’s infrared “depth sensing device.”

“The invention includes obtaining depth values indicating distances from one or more physical objects in a physical scene to a depth sensing device,” the patent continued, and is a “system for providing a real-time three-dimensional interactive environment, comprising: a depth sensing device capable of obtaining depth values indicating distances from one or more physical objects in a physical scene to a depth sensing device.”

Sony hasn’t announced plans for an updated PS Eye camera, but it’s possible it could be saving such a leap in the camera’s technology for its next console.

You can look over the patent diagrams on the USPTO site.

I don’t really think they should bother unless they can execute it really well, having another kinect isn’t going to push the industry forward at all.
I would much rather they invested more into making games for the PS move, it seems like a far better idea than the kinect.

They can’t really do this anyway after making so much fun out of the kinect for not having buttons(ala http://youtu.be/w0puP8nrIU8)

All-in-all, it seems like a terribly bad me-too idea.

    Am I wrong?

@1 Agreed. This sounds a lot like another Kinect which can only apply to so many genres without it being awkward and unnatural to do. Apply this patent with a less-gimmicky version of the PS Move, and it’ll sell big.

All I want is an HD camera. SD camera on HD screen looks like shite.

Sony has developed something special in each generation from ps1 to ps3. Hope its a big step forward combined with biometric sensors (also patented by sony).
Although if its just a kinect 2 or something then they are wasting money on R&D. Utterly useless if its that.
