Ironclad announces team-based RTS Sins of a Dark Age, beta this summer
Sins of a Solar Empire developer Ironclad has announced Sins of a Dark Age, a fantasy team-based RTS for PC.

It’s free-to-play, as you can see on the official site.
According to this blog post there’ll be a beta this summer.
“Sins of a Dark Age is a totally new and unique strategy experience that combines elements of the traditional RTS and action RTS,” said the company.
“We took the best parts of each, innovated on both, and added our own twists and turns resulting in something unlike any other strategy game. Despite all this we still feel it is remarkably accessible for new and veteran players alike.”
In Sins of a Dark Age, players join an online team consisting of one commander “and a small group of heroes who work together to accomplish a specific scenario goal. Go head-to-head against an enemy team in a short, fast-paced multiplayer match or work cooperatively against the AI in custom scenarios.”
Press release here. More information will be released in the coming months.

If this is anything like Sins of a Solar Empire, in terms of scope(not setting! lol) then this should be very good – and free to play? So its another MMORTS?

This is gonna be interesting.
I’ve never been able to get into a multiplayer RTS, I think I like building armies and shit too much, and I don’t want anyone to mess with that.
But this is Ironclad. I’m gonna watch it.

Oh good grief.
Another MOBA. Another one.
Did we not have enough MOBA games? Are we somehow undergoing a MOBA shortage or something? Am I living in an alternate Universe where there are already tens of recent MOBA games out, with tens more in development?

Sighs… so disappointed.. they even ripped off the whole “Sins of a”
No one wants another forced multiplayer game.. make it plain old RTS.. not this DOTA MOBA whatever nonsense..

“The first time you participate in an all out siege is just awesome. Imagine your commander sends his first wave of chaff infantry against the enemy defenses. As they start to take losses he signals to you and your fellow heroes to charge while his siege weaponry and volleys of arrows fly overhead shortly after.
All the while, waves of exotic magic flow back and forth across the battlefield annihilating entire hosts of troops on both sides. Suddenly the enemy commander’s cavalry charges out from a hidden position attempting to catch your casters off guard. What happens next could decide the fate of the entire war.”
Sometimes reading shit pays off. Whattayaknow.
That doesn’t sound like any MOBA I know of.

“Action RTS” “MOBA” “Free to Play”
Wow this could not be much more disappointing… such a shame, Sins of a Solar Empire is something special, this is set to be a dull generic money grinder complete with Tolkien fan-fic story/setting

From what I have been reading – this isnt a MOBA game but an RTS online – think End of Nations but probably not in those mass numbers. Only time will tell but I dont see this being a MOBA.
If it was, it would be stupid for a small developer to take on the might that is League of Legends, Valve and Blizzard

Free to play? To hell with that, then.

As a dev for the game, I thought I’d drop in and shed some light on some of the issues.
So far we’ve been hesitant to put a label on the genre. The game doesn’t feel like an arena, ‘action-RTS’ fails to describe the important commander role and ‘RTS’ doesn’t do justice to our heros. We’ve been using the phase ‘Hero and Commander Strategy’ to describe it. The experience is new and ultimately people will need to try it out for themselves.
We invite people to give us feedback on their issues. I think one of the most popular misconceptions is that all Free-to-play games involve players buying power in the game. We Hate that concept. You will never buy power in Sins of Dark Age. Success in our game will be depend on your skill, strategy, tactics and coordination with your team. Your purchases will be aesthetic.
We are also taking a stance against grinding in the game. We want players to always feel they will experience a fair and challenging battle.
You might be pleasantly surprised with what you find on our FAQ support page.
