The party ends: Metal Gear Online 2.00 to finish in June

Konami’s announced it’s to close Metal Gear Online on June 21 after four years of service.

The online version of the game, which was on its second run alongside the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 after the launch of the first Metal Gear Online with Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, will close just before the series celebrates its 25th anniversary in July.

Before the closure, the MGO shop will cease, with all new character creations halted by April. The three expansion packs – Meme, Gene and Scene – will be available for free for players before the close.

In hindsight, this has been a day coming for a while: servers on the game’s client have been deserted for a while. Nevertheless, goodnight sweet prince.

Thanks, Kotaku.

Think I kinda owe my ‘internet existence’ on both versions of MGO1 and 2. Not to mention, a match with my old clan on MGO1 is one of the best online gaming moments I’ve ever had.

Obviously, it’s gotta be making way for a new MGO (Rising? Or even Peace Walker HD?), but I am gonna miss the old gal. :(

What? I’m totally shocked. It was one of my favourite online-games. That’s a very sad news. I hope they make MGO 3 sometime soon…

The fact you needed 2 different IDs was terrible tho.. really turned me off the whole thing tbh

Looks like getting MGS 4 achievements is faiding away, dam and would play it again to earn achievments for it

Really? I used to be a super hardcore of this game a few years ago, absolutely loved it. I haven’t been on for over a year now but it’s sad to know it’s deserted.

Really hoping for an MGO 3 on Rising, that may very well be the deciding factor whether I get it or not.

I remember playing the trial kinda thing on MGS4. It was rather fun but such a pain to actually get onto. I remember all that ID rubbish. For a console game, you really shouldn’t need all of that.

@7 Yeah the ID thing was not needed tbh, that could of made all the difference really, accessing via the PSN would have made it so much easier. They could have had more players and more interest, instead they ended up with a smaller fan base, albeit quite a dedicated bunch from what I remember.

I can’t even remember the various ID’s I need to get on there. Shame. I used to have a whole lot of fun with MGO.
