Microsoft has launched the Kinect for Windows commercial license program. The sensor features the latest Microsoft Speech components such as: “near mode” which sees objects as close as 40 centimeters in front of the sensor; improved skeletal tracking enabling control over which user is being tracked; and a commercial-ready installer making it easy to install runtime and driver components. To further “encourage small businesses” to adopt the sensor, Microsoft and Tech Stars are running a Kinect Accelerator program which offers entrepreneurs, engineers and “innovators” the opportunity to develop applications as part of a 3-month intensive competition. The Kinect for Windows commercial license and purchasable hardware will be available in 12 countries, and sensors and accessories can be purchased directly from an online store, as well as various distributors and re-sellers.

Finnish games mag Pelaaja has suggested Microsoft will hold a spring Xbox showcase at the end of this month in San Francisco. The event on February 29 is being advertised as the place where Halo 4 will get its proper unveil in the US, although the specific nature of the content to be shown is not mentioned.

GT’s gone live with a new three minute clip of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City ahead of the shooter’s March release. The video shows mainly action gameplay, but Nemesis also makes an appearance near the end. It also shows one of the Umbrella lot become infected by a zombie and become one herself. Ubisoft’s announced its recent art exhibit featuring Assassin’s Creed in Japan has raised ¥4,067,215 (£33,850) in the country. The money from the show, which ran from August last year to last month, will be donated towards Red Cross Japan’s continued tsunami relief efforts in the country.

Major Nelson advises streaming video services CinemaNow and Crackle have both been activated on Xbox Live. CinemaNow is only available within the US, but Crackle has also been pushed out to Australia, Canada and the UK. The new additions join a growing collection of entertainment services available from the Metro-style Xbox 360 dashboard update, which Microsoft has touted as “the future of TV”.
