New project in the works at Maxis

Monday, 30th January 2012 03:22 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Maxis, the studio behind the SimCity and Spore franchises, has a “triple-A simulation style game” in the works, according to recruiting.

The new game is mentioned in a job ad turned up by Superannuation.

The listing gives little else away besides a mention of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well as PC.

Maxis’s last effort was Darkspore, an action RPG built on previous title Spore, releases in April last year. The studio has been quiet in the interim, with an expected console port of Darkspore failing to surface.

Although the franchise is now in the hands of its own dedicated studio, The Sims was originally a Maxis product. The developer was co-founded by Will Wright, but the famed creative has since departed to form Stupid Fun Club.

Thanks, Blue.

What I always liked about Maxis back in the early days was that even though they had their massive successes (SimCity was a license to print money long before the Sims ever came on the scene), they were never afraid to try random, obscure titles, risky but creative, that simply might not work. SimCopter was great fun, and SimAnt. (Yes, SimAnt was a real thing: )

They even had titles as ambitious as SimEarth and SimLife. It’d be great to see those revisited now that twenty years worth of technological improvement have passed.

I hope it’s SimCity 5. I still play a ton of 4 — an updated version would be nice.

    Pretty please.

Maxis is so crap these days. They need to get back to basics.
