Rumour – Nintendo considering renaming Wii U

CVG is using extremely circumspect language to suggest it’s been given inside word on a possible Wii U name change. Difficulty marketing the 3DS – perceived by many consumers as a DS with a gimmick, rather than a full hardware upgrade – is cited as inspiration for the possible change. The Wii U was first shown at E3 2011, and Nintendo admitted it faffed up a confusing debut; a full reveal is expected at E3 2012 ahead of a release before the holidays.

@1 -agreed – Wii-u doesnt really sound like a completely new console. Even if they change the name, the Wii-u hardware still looks like the original Wii, they would need to make it look a bit different to match the name (if they don’t stick with Wii in it)

I thought that name was horrible from the get go…they better rename it soon if they plan on making a splash.

They sould get a new name, it’s confusing for some people with only a U to set it appart from the old Wii.

Not everyone is as in to gaming as many of us.. :)

I think it’s a good game for what it’s worth. I think that rather than worrying about the name, they should worry about winning over the hardcore. BC and HD up-rezzing would be a good start, followed by an online infrastructure worth a shit, and less customer gouging. That’s my two cents worth anyway…

They should call it Nintendo Next :)

They should change this silly name and they should change the colour of the console. Otherwise they will get mixed up by regular customers.

OH FOR THE LOVE OF GAMING PLEASE DO IT NINTENDO.

Of all thing’s nintendo could have done to piss me off was continue on with the wii brand. Would it really be so bad to create something new and fresh? I’ve slowly over time been more at ease with this system in hopes they will actually have a decent line up of games but “wiiu”… Fucking hell, it’s such a shit name. If they changed the look of the console too I would be over the moon.

No more wii 2.5!

Well i hope they go for previous code names they used in past systems, like ultra stream, NR nintendo Revolution, UNES ultra nintendo evolution System, etc, something on those lines, i did really like the revolution and ultra codenames back in the day i whish they used in some form.

Having said that i didnt mind the Wii U name, for me they want to carry on the success of the wii, but i think they are right to not make the same mistakes they made with the 3DS, for that i guess they are going to think really carefully this time, the name, the console desing, the price point and the games available at launch, just to not make the same mistakes twice, and i mean as not be seen as an upgraded wii like it did happened with the 3DS vs DS issue, that and implement a robust online experience.

My guesses:

The Nintendo U
Revolution

Might be a no-no but I like just calling it NES. It reflects what it is. Nintendo Entertainment System. But I could go for NGC(Game Console), NGS(Game System), or just Nintendo.

So long as it plays Nintendo games, whats in the name?

@22 As other folk have said its really important for Nintendo that the Wii-U isn’t confused as being just a slight update on to the Wii. The 3DS apparently suffered for folk just thinking it was literally a DS with 3D support.

How about ditching the Wii & just call it the Nintendo Eww.

@22 Couldn’t agree more.

In an age of “reboots” using simply the original name, rebooting the NES and simply calling it “Nintendo” or “Nintendo Entertainment System” makes perfect sense to me. Actually seems quite like perfect timing.
