Rumour – Next Xbox has six times the power of Xbox 360

As if one Xbox 720 tech rumour weren’t enough for the day, here’s another.

In reaction to an earlier report that the next Microsoft console is in development, IGN cited anonymous sources “close to the project” for word that components will go into mass production this year.

The source agreed the core will be based on an AMD GPU, but nominated the 6000 series – specifically, the Radeon HD 6670 – and not Southern Islands 7000 series.

“In real terms, the Xbox 720′s raw graphics processing power is expected to be six times that of the Xbox 360 and will yield 20-percent greater performance than Nintendo’s forthcoming console, the Wii U,” the site reports.

Thanks, Engadget.

Bit underwhelming if true, especially given the length this gen seems to going on. I doubt many on here have the intention of getting it even if it was more powerful than this rumour suggests.

Oh great, so now its 3 years or older GPU tech wise, wonderful :(
Well Sony, there you go, beat that GPU and up the ram and you will be next gen savior.

Good card today, shitty card by the time it comes out.

It will be fine. The next gen of consoles should be the best yet.
All games will be proper 1080p and 60fps becomes a reality for the Microsoft Shitbox 2000.

I’m more interested in the storage aspects. Mainly to see what they think will be good enough to manage next gen content delivery.

It really doesn’t matter what will sony do, since pc releases will be limited to xbox3 ports. SO, if this is true we’re fucked for another half a dozen years. Good news they gotta put dx11 there even if 3 years old tech.

Yah I just double check the stats, it’s not even remotely top class in its year

I really don’t see dx11 @ 1080p res even with console optimizations.

I have been telling you folks, next gen is not going to be about graphics. And its not going to look visualy to much ahead of where we are currently at. Think smoother framrates, wider color paletes, and I hope some better AI.

But like many leaks and whatnot, I doubt it is safe to put too much stock into anything at this point.

Just temper your expectations. Next gen could simply be more of the same type of stuff we are used to in this gen. I doubt the games themself will evolve that much, but the ways we play them, interact with them, and even aquire them prolly will.

And besides, even if it were possible to make fully featured games that look as good as a Pixar Studio movie, do you know how long something like would take to develop, or how much cash it would take? Thats one of the biggest reasons games won’t graphicly move forward in leaps and bounds from where we are right now. That and more TVs with 720p are sold then TVs with 1080p.

I expect next gen to be full of cloud based services, like building a portfolio of entertainment(games, movies, music) in the cloud. And a lot of subscription based franchises, like CoD Elite – so long as you pay the yearly sub, you get all of the DLC, maybe if we are lucky, even the cost of new games – unless new games only come in form of updates on old ones). I can see EA doing a Fifa sub, where you buy the game at full price, then sub to it, and get yearly updates included in your sub. Same for CoD and the likes.

Gonna be interesting.

I am sure MS, Sony and their respective allies are hard at work right now thinking of ways to monitize the crap out of us next gen.

“All games will be proper 1080p and 60fps becomes a reality for the Microsoft Shitbox 2000.”

Sorry, but i finished 1080p in 2010. I play only on 2560×1600 + games in most cases started to support that resolution and it’s awesome. I’m not coming back.

@OG,
“I have been telling you folks, next gen is not going to be about graphics. ”

Actually it is. 6000 series of Radeon is a fuckton of power compared to the 360 even if 6000 series is not something new.

If console graphics could be labeled as a sequential number line it would go as follows:

Current ps360 gen graphics started at 5, then progressed to 6 and 7.

Next gen will start at 7 and progress to 8.

First run next gen games will not look much if any different then current gen games. Over time the gap will likly grow as it makes sense.

Just keep in mind Erth, power is only one part of the equation.

And regaurdless the PC will still be capible of being miles ahead.

And really none of it ‘possed to matter, after all better graphics(slightly or marginaly) don’t mean better playing games. Just prettier ones.

But my trick knee is still telling me that for a number of reasons(regaurdless of what will be promised either from ceo or tech sheet), next gen games won’t be leaps and bounds forward graphicly speaking.

The 360 and PS3 have just 512mb ram. The chip in the 360 is equivalent to a GeForce 8000/ATI HD 2000 series. It’s not the power, it’s how you use it.

Cool story bro, you must have a large penis. How many TVs do you know that can support that resolution?

There never going to be standard for like 1080p or 60 frames.
IF you want to make let say burnout you would want 60 frames but resolution will be decrease for like 1800*800 I just give you example.
But if same horror game like Dead Space then you would want 1080p but not so important for 60 frames.
They will do that just to increase overall quality of textures, effect…

“Cool story bro, you must have a large penis. How many TVs do you know that can support that resolution?”
its not TV, it a PC monitor , an IPS monitor, its support that resolution very easy.
there are 27″ and 30″

@19 But still not many consoles users play on Monitor ? Also they aren’t many that played on full HD TV either.

#21

Erthazus
25/01/12, 9:57 am

@16, It’s a monitor, bro. 27 and 30 inch supports that resolution.
Nvidia and ATI already supports that resolution with their newest video cards. 1080p is the thing of 2006.

also, in theory 6000 ATI cards support 2560×1600 resolution.

@20, we are at the age where TV’s are going to have much better resolution.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0m1XmvBey8 Look, Payne. There are already 4K videos on Youtube just for example.

#22

Fin
25/01/12, 10:04 am

@21

Yeah dur. My point was that all current TVs top out at 1080p. Consoles will never require a monitor over a TV, so you saying you play at Whatever×Bullshit is irrelevant.

The first 4K TVs will be out this year, maybe. HDTVs were more prevelant when this generation of consoles launched than 4K ones will be with next gen.
The jump from SD to HD was far bigger than the jump from HD to 4K anyway. Microsoft and Sony won’t release a console tailored to such a miniscule market.

#23

Maximum Payne
25/01/12, 10:26 am

@21 You know the tech you know even next gen console will note have power for above 1080p.And if it is true about 6670 then next gen with start with 1080p and then just lower and lower resolution to ”improve” graphics just like they are doing now.

I think the main problem with consoles is that in order to become affordable, they cant look and next-gen tech and think “Hey! I wanna stuff my console with the best tech evah!” Well, unless we wanted to end up with consoles priced around a decent laptop. And what would be the point then? Why do you think the PS3 was so overwhelming overpriced when it first came :S

Considering the longer life cycle of consoles I think they should have aim a little higher. But it’s not so bad. Just put a lot of RAM in it please.

@24 Ati 6670 in retail in my country cost around $80 so how much would cost if Microsoft order 10 mill for manufacture price ?
At least they can do 6850 which is around $120 in retail.

Like i said in a previous comment in the oban chip topic, if one looks at the previous gens, all of them were won by the less capable console graphical wise, ps1, ps2 and now wii, therefore i will not find strange at all, that sony and microsoft go for the less expensive choice, now more than ever due to the struggle of expensive consoles (ps3, vita and 3DS), of course it will be better than this gen, they will aim at better graphics, but keeping in mind an affordable price, without having that many losses for so many years in the long run, therefore i think they will go for a true 1080 p, with an increase in the GPU department and +60 hz, Therefore i dont find this strange or unthinkable at all, really.
P.S oldergamer comments +1, also if this is true then what i said in past comments regarding that the difference between the wiiU and the other consoles will be not that big compare to this gen, holds some water.

They will have some form of media to buy from shops. It will not all be downloadable.
If any of the consoles did that, they would loose a lot of money and a lot of customers. We are nowhere near ready to rely on downloading games only, cloud based gaming.

Example, here in the Uk, Virgin media, we are on 20mb, the connection is that crap we barely see 2mb. Theres a 4Gb limit and most full games would be over that so if we tried to download one game, our connection speed is halved for 3days, meaning prob take a week to get one game. Where instead i could just walk to my local shop and purchase in 20mins.

Maybe nextnextgen it will be ready but till internet speeds are up and more reliable, and no download limits, its not gonna happen.

1) If it’s 6 times the power of a 360 and 1.2 times the power of a Wii U, doesn’t that mean that the Wii U is 5 times the power of a 360?

2) Wouldn’t it be a marketing failure in and of itself to be merely 20% more powerful than Ninty’s tech?

3) How do they even know what Ninty’s got?

Ahh, I love the pre-console announce hype. Fanboys get to argue about how powerful their favorite consoles will be. Tempers will flare. Feelings will be hurt. And Nintendo geeks will continue to whine about how their platform never gets any of the “big games”. The cycle never ends, does it?

Seriously, guys. You’re gonna discuss, argue and nitpick over some off-the-cuff figure that some random dude (who may not even have anything to do with the project) threw out there?

“Ohh, yeah! It’s 6 times more powerful than the 360! Or something like that.”

It even sounds like a figure someone pulled out of their ass. Let’s reel it in a bit, folks. ;)

@31 Indeed.

Frankly, I don’t give a damn how powerful it is (or isn’t), as long as it has a solid release of good titles and a robust, well designed interface.

Powerful hardware only get syou so far, a fact that has been proven time and again in this industry. And the last time video that games need right now are to become even more expensive to develop.

I welcome the next gen. Even if I don’t buy it, at least it’ll force lazy ass developers to have to give us AA and shiny graphics on PC ports.

If true, which it probably isn’t, that’s not quite the jump in GPU I would expect.

Of course, if MS decides that every Xbox will ship with a Kinect 2 sensor included then unless they feel they can risk a high launch price based on marketshare/brand (and look how well that worked for Sony with arguably more markeshare/brand recognition) I guess the console specs might well be a more modest jump to keep the whole package affordable enough.

Would like Microsoft to build an Xbox certified HTPC, combining all the elements of Win8 & the Xbox into one console sized box at a reasonable price. Better yet, a Steam certified box backed by Valve aimed at the console market running Win8 under a customized interface to highlight the gaming aspects. I reckon the Radeon 6850 would be perfect for this..
