GameStop UK closes Northern Irish stores

Tuesday, 24th January 2012 09:41 GMT By Johnny Cullen

GameStop UK has closed all of its stores based in Northern Ireland, according to a Gaming Liberty report (via CC).

The closure was effective from yesterday. Staff were only informed of the pullout from the North this past Sunday, with posters greeting customers outside the flagship store in Belfast.

TGL claims that NDAs have been signed by store management to prevent them talking about the closure until a statement has been made by GameStop, while customers have been told on its UK Facebook page of the retailer that “all outstanding deposits and gift cards” will be honoured on GameStop UK’s website.

Locations that had GameStop outlets included Derry and Newry, as well as Belfast.

Doesn’t make sense, to be honest. GameStop Ireland was running those NI stores from its Dublin HQ (unless GameStop UK took over jurisdiction when it established itself last year).

    Still, though. :(

The Facebook account says that Gamestop’s pulling out of UK retail altogether, moving to an online-only business. Would like to see an explanation of what motivated this kind of drastic measure, though. It must have been on the cards for a while, but I’m caught offguard that it’s thefirst that’s been said about it.

I’m guessing that they saw the almighty kicking that GAME has been receiving lately and not having the infrastructure in place to weather such a storm, thought ‘fuck that’ and cut their losses.

Bricks ‘n’ mortar isn’t a terribly fun (or profitable) place to be at the moment.

Makes perfect sense. Retail for entertainment products has been dying on its arse for a long time, the death rattle is just reaching its climax.

retail is going to have to do something more interesting than fling a crap selection of overpriced games haphazardly onto poorly designed shelving systems to bring people back in.

funny how that if a developer closes down everyone sucks the companys cock and say shit like “good luck” and shit, but when its a retail company no one could give a shit, gamers are the most selfish people on the planet. FACT

@3: Money. GameStop is the most money-grubbing corporation there ever was. To be fair, you HAVE to be that way in the retail industry, where margins are thin as it is. GameStop must have decided that it’s a bigger monetary risk to keep the stores open than it is to do business online instead.

Why these stores were not profitable, however, is a good damn question.
