Project Titan to include product placement

Blizzard’s next MMO – of which we know only the codename, Project Titan – just got a tiny little bit less mysterious.

A new recruiting ad on Blizzard’s website calls for a franchise development producer to “work with major consumer brands to facilitate product placement and licensing within the world of Blizzard Entertainment’s next-gen MMO that enhances the gameplay experience”.

While the inclusion of sponsored product placement is interesting enough given the ongoing debate on the sustainability of the premium MMO model, the ad has sparked more speculative discussion; Beefjack, for example, argues product placement may suggest a real-world setting.

The successful applicant will also be responsible for Blizzard’s merchandise and licensing efforts, with particular reference to books, action figures, comics, short movies, and apparel.

I heard this is a less serious MMO compared to WOW, so product placement wouldn’t surprise me.

I can understand F2P and low-budget games needing the revenue, but Blizzard, you’re greedy. You’re like the Comcast of gaming.

+1! But are you really surprised? This is Blizzard, who are part of Activision.

Activision, EA, Ubisoft, and their like are pretty much all-consuming beasts. Boo for publically owned companies.

Well when I previously guessed this was gonna be a “life” mmo (like second life) it seems I might have been onto something!

A Blizz takes on the Sims mmo?

@6 I have a very hard time seeing that. Blizzard is still Blizzard until proven otherwise.

Something like a life-sim wouldn’t fit with their style at all. They’ve always been pretty action-oriented.

I really hope you’re wrong :P

People have to take into account that this MMO is planned to cannibalize the users of World of Warcraft (Blizzard said so themselves) which means this still have to be something that attracts the same crowd.

What about a Harry Potter MMORPG? Pottermore is NOT what fans of Harry Potter wanted. From what I’ve read about Titan it could possibly be the HP MMO because it’s based in the real world, it has been worked on since 2007 which is at the height of Harry Potter popularity and still is extremely popular. Millions of people created accounts on Pottermore this year with the hopes it would be more of a gaming experience. Maybe Project Titan is the harry potter mmo? Any thoughts?
