Japanese charts: Vita sales fall 57% over last week

Wednesday, 18th January 2012 17:26 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

PS Vita sales showed a drastic decline on Media Create’s weekly sales chart with only 18,361 units moved, a 57% decline over the 42,648 units sold last week. On the software end, Namco’s Super Robot Taise OG Saga Masou Kishin II moved 81,996 units for its debut on PSP.

In Japan, Vita saw an upswing at launch, but sales have progressively dropped ever since:

  • Launch: 324,859
  • Week 2: 72,479
  • Week 3: 42,648
  • Week 4: 18,361

For the week ending January 15, the holiday sales drop not only affected Vita, but 3DS as well, with unit sales for the handheld dropping 50% over the week prior, despite still maintaining the top spot on the hardware chart.

Media Create has stopped reporting sales of DS Lite, which last week only sold 28 units in the region.

PS3 and PSP, which landed in second and thrid place, respectively, also saw a drop in sales.

The full hardware chart with last week’s sales in parentheses is below, courtesy of Andriasang.

  • 3DS: 100,668 (197,952)

    Nelson: “Ha-ha!”

Uh, actually that seems a little harsh, but then there were only mad obsessives who were convinced Vita would do well at its current price.

Price cut needed, and major panic mode should be engaged at SCE.

I don’t know why Sony keeps thinking people will buy their products at such high prices.

Everything they release is too expensive, then sales are disappointing. Every. Fucking. Time.

Then the 3DS comes out and even THAT fails to sell well, because of the cost. A new Nintendo handheld failed to sell, and they had to cut the price. Just think about that for a moment.

Then they ask Sony about the Vita pricing and.. “yeah we’re probably gonna keep it the same. Which, btw, is at a higher price point than the 3DS failed to sell at.”

Why don’t they get it? Are they just that arrogant, or just that stupid?

Comparing the first week to the last one indicates a drop % of 95%, thats pretty alarming if you ask me, like razor mentioned above a panic mode will be engaged for sure, i dont have numbers, but if i dont recall wrong, in recent memory this is the first time i see that kind of drop % on any console (home or handled) in japan,in a short amount of time.

Having said that i think a price cut will do the trick to turn things around, hopefully this will happen sooner rather than later, so i can pick mine too.

Problem is though that if they cut the price now, they’ll lose even more money. Of course the flip side is that if demand remains low, they won’t have to manufacture as many, won’t sell as many and therefore won’t lose as much money…

It doesn’t look like royalties are providing a large income as there are no Vita games in the JP chart. Accessories could be making Sony some money, but you can’t imagine it being very much.

I don’t get why people are so furious over the price. Considering its specs, it’s well below any comparable product & even costs more to make than Sony’s asking, this is one of the few Sony products that have been competitively priced in quite a long time. The SoC is likely the same as the one to be on the iPad 3 which will be over double the price.

It’s pretty proportionate to the drop in 3DS sales though.

What’s the price disparity between the two? I haven’t been keeping up.

It’s not very good for prestige that their newest launch is being outsold by the PSP though.

*Update* Hmmm, around here a PS Vita is twice as expensive as a 3DS, so not even selling a 5th can’t be good.

With the PSP selling four times as much in Japan, bet Sony is wishing it had launched in the west first. We’d have lapped it and Uncharted up.

Also, Sony would have been competing for headlines against the Kindle Fire in the States, now it has to compete against – guess which one the tech press will spend more time drooling over!

And the games press might join in if Apple finally puts all those game industry hires it made to good use and launches a core game initiative with a wireless controller and some top devs in the fold.

Extremely worrying for them surley? I’m undecided on day 1 purchase now and this is making me think I’m definitely going to wait and see for a price drop/bundles.

Gonna be interesting to see how it wil sell when it hits the rest of the world, espesially Europe, most countrys are big fans of the Playstation brand and most European countrys are money strong.

I think the PSV wil sell bad in the US like in Japan because most people are strugling financialy.

A dip of %50 for all devices in Japan is no indication of failure for the vita. The only thing it needs over there is a dynasty gundam title, and Monster Hunter 4. Can’t wait to see how successful it will be in the states, especially around the release of Mortal Kombat 9 for the vita.

Remember when the price was first shown and EVERYONE was excited for it? That died pretty fast when the 3DS had a price cut. I personally think that the PSVita doesn’t need a price cut. You get alot of good stuff for $250 and like Razor said, “if they cut the price now, they’ll lose even more money”. If it cost them $100 to make it like Nintendo did with the 3DS, then I would agree that the price needs to come down, but that is not the case. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

No point sugar coating it: that week 4 Vita figure is catastrophic.

@12 Add sales tax to the US figure (rate depends on state). Also you forget companies have to factor currency exchange rates and expected range of fluctuations.

The UK figure is about £191.50 when you discount VAT (our sales tax).

3DS is released, everyone complains about its price point and its features, poor launch games and support.

Vita announced, lots of interesting games, long list of gimmicks and features and 3G and all sorts of shit. Consensus is the price is actually pretty decent in comparison.

    3DS price drop.

So the device is out a month in 1 country and sells half a million and people think that it needs a price drop? Perhaps some people really are just dumb. Also, why do people not see the overall sales sony is hitting on 3 devices of their on the market?

They have a divided investment from 1 home console and 2 portables. Their doing pretty damn good and besides we are less then a month away from the global release so stop counting the eggs of the chicken coup before you visit them.

See this other thing is selling in different amounts to this one thing, that means that this one thing needs to be cheaper than the other thing and then it might sell as much as it.
