Concept art for a Day 1 Studios pitch, based on the steampunk comic Gotham by Gaslight, has surfaced thanks to a posting from its artist, Julie Farrell. Discovered by Supererogatory, the UI art was created two years ago, according to, but it looks as though THQ didn’t bite. According to what Farrell told Joystiq, the game would have had a story mode, grenades, a “slowmo” button, and shooter elements. Speaking on her portfolio page, Farrell said at the request of THQ, she has taken her art down, but it is still viewable over on Kotaku. Gotham by Gaslight was created by writer Brian Augustyn and featured art from Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. The comic, a one-off from DC, took place in turn-of-the-century Gotham City, and focused on Bruce Wayne trying to stop Jack the Ripper.

I would flatly reject making a real Batman game after Rocksteady came onto the scene.

I recently started playing Arkham City, and it is so good it scares me. I was expecting something like Arkham Asylum part 1.5, but I’m just blown away.

If you could make a game that actually lived up to the hype of a Rockstar game, Rocksteady would be the ones to actually do it.

#1 Yeap,Arkham City is just that good and I can’t wait to see what the guys at Rocksteady have in store for us in the future…I mean surely they can’t top AC….

While the Rocksteady games are superb, the Batman universe is a huge and varied multiverse, and just as there is room for different flavours of comic and movie, there is room for different styles of game. (See Lego Batman.)

The true crime is that this excellently fresh sounding spin on the mythos got shafted, while the genuinely offensively atrocious, generic, stupid, horrible looking Gotham City Impostors has been given the go ahead and will soon be released.
