Analyst believes Sony needs to build “consumer excitement” around PlayStation brand in 2012

Friday, 6th January 2012 17:58 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

DFC Intelligence’s David Cole believes the PlayStation has lost a bit of shine over the years, which to Cole is unfortunate due to the PS3 being “an incredibly robust system with a great content library.”

“Unfortunately for Sony, not all consumers seem to have gotten the word,” Cole told IndustryGamers. “The Vita also looks like a strong potential contender as it has a reasonable price point now in the time of expensive tablet systems. However, features like a 3G option may only confuse consumers.

“Of course, once again initial content will be limited so there will not be much incentive for consumers to rush and get the device before prices drop and the library builds.”

Cole believes it will take Sony a while “to build momentum around the Vita,” and the biggest challenge for the firm in 2012 will be to build “consumer excitement around the Sony and PlayStation brand.”

Vita will release in Europe and the US on February 22.

No shit. Sony need to publicise the Vita for sure. A fair few people I know (who are gamers) know very little about it a d some haven’t even heard of it. it seems they might have dropped the ball on marketing/PR already. Where is the hype?

I do agree with the analyst. I hope Sony does fix this problem as this year goes on.

Sony need to start the PR machine a few weeks before it launches so everyone gamer or not wil know a new portable gaming system is coming.

Other then that its ofc the games, but if it is something Sony has been good with the PS3 its exlusive games. We can only hope it wil be the same on the PSV, if so it wil sell itself.

I don’t care about consumer excitement. I just need good games and i don’t buy games by looking at the flashy Ad’s or hearing Jack Tretton’s “PS3 just hitting it’s stride” brainwashing bullshit.

Well, since the game retailers will carry the accessories and games for Vita a week earlier than the official release date, I guess that will make up for the lack of advertisement, if you catch my drift.
