GameStop apologises over Last Guardian cancellation rumour
GameStop has issued a statement apologising for concern caused after customers reportedly received pre-recorded messages announcing that their pre-order for The Last Guardian had been culled from the chain’s system and canceled.
“The Last Guardian has not been cancelled by Sony as we incorrectly stated in an automated call to reservation customers,” the store said in a statement published by Kotaku.
“Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system. The Last Guardian will be reinstated for pre-order when a firm launch date is known.”
One customer, Darren Hupke, recorded the message he received and posted it online here (thanks, Dutch).
Various GS employees also earlier confirmed to Joystiq that the game has been removed from the chain’s “coming soon” list.
SCEA’s senior director of corporate communications, Patrick Seybold, responded, saying the reports were “not true”, as the game has not been cancelled.
Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida also denied the talk on Twitter.

Gamestop should be canceled. Their employees are fucking morons, and their prices are ridiculous.

It’s not cancelled though you can’t say it’s a PS3 game anymore. Regardless Shuhei Yoshida says it’s not cancelled. Considering that he’s the head of WWS which basically puts him in control of all Sony’s internal dev studios of course it’s not cancelled.
I don’t envy their position though. But yeah if you want confirmation here you go -> https://twitter.com/#!/yosp

@4
Its still a PS3 game. Not sure what you are talking about saying that it is not.

@4 said “It’s not cancelled though you can’t say it’s a PS3 game anymore.”
Sony owns the game and Team ICO is a division of Sony. Reckon you’ll see it on XBox 360?

@4 and @5 jeez what I meant clearly was that it need not be a PS3 game.
It’s not like the PS4 won’t be coming out by 2013 and at the slow rate this game’s coming out it doesn’t seem quite likely for 2012. Why not have it as a PS4 launch title. Not like it’s a heavy seller of several millions. Besides it being on the PS4 would help it move systems in the art crowd.
It could be a mistranslated memo in which it was cancelled as a PS3 game but not cancelled as a game for Sony systems. If you’ve ever read my post history I’ve been more positive on the game than not.

Making it a PS4 game would be a huge mistake when so many PS3 owners are waiting for it. How many great PS2 games came out when the PS3 was new? God of War 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, etc… I expect Sony to do the same when the PS4 comes out.

Are you feelin’ alright, bro? MGS3 was released in 2004… PS3 in 2006.

This game is not a system seller. It will be a play once, tell your mates down the fucking pub how unique it is, then trade in for that year’s CoD/BF.
Hell the only reason it hasn’t been dropped is because Sony have sunk to much into it. They got to release it. Pity all the viagra in Playboy mansion won’t stop it from flopping.

@10 – In the future, the past has already occurred!
Actually, now that you mention it, I’ve been sick for a week. Not sure that’s responsible for my error in release dates, but you get the general idea of what I was talking about.

@9 Yeah b/c those select hardcore gamers that would even be interested in the game would definitely not buy a PS4 when it comes out right?
@4 I agree it’s a definite possibility that it may miss the PS3 and be a launch title for PS4…personally, I don’t really care since I was not interested in the game in the first place
And truthfully, nothing wrong with GameStop doing this although they could have conveyed their message more clearly…I’m sure they take similar action with other games under the same circumstances.

I’d be surprised if it isn’t being fast-tracked with something close to reckless abandon at this point.
Surely Sony doesn’t actually enjoy throwing money at developers for year after year without seeing a product.
@11 I’m not sure. “Gamer cred” (hypes slightly more zealous, but just as superficial brother) seems to count for an awful lot. You think Skyrim sold only to people who played the previous ones?
I’d say that if you can sell something like Hard Rain, you can probably do the same thing with The Last Guardian.
