Kojima: Project Ogre an open-world affair

Hideo Kojima has told CNN his next project, Project Ogre, will be open-world, a switch-up from the linear path that Metal Gear Solid games have provided in the past.

Kojima admits he’s planning to “make something very free” rather than “making something very cinematic” like with past Metal Gear games.

“The kind of game I’m making is some game that has a very wide entrance, a very open entrance,” he said.

CNN says in its report that Kojima is quoted as saying the title is “set in a very open world where players can wander around and explore freely. Players should still be able to find new sights and worthwhile adventures after having played the game for as many as 100 hours.”

Overnight in Japan, Kojima tweeted a new picture of the capabilities of the Fox Engine, the new engine being used for future Kojima Productions projects. Two teaser images appeared last week.

The picture showed a KP staffer in real-life against his digital counterpart that was created using the Fox Engine. The image is below.

Kojima recently re-unveiled Metal Gear Rising under the development of Platinum Games, while Kojima Productions will watch on in the background.

Doesn’t look like him. Chin, Cheeks, Forehead and Jaw are off.

And the ears.

Still not impressed by this “awesome” new technology.

And I agree with #1: completely different.

Less cinematic? Well that’s reassuring at least. Open world? Interesting…

“Hideo always knows what he is doing.”

Aye, and that’s usually trying to be a movie director.

What I want from Kojima is exactly the opposite of what he usually delivers, so open-world and far less cutscenes sounds like a step away from movies and into game territory, which is good.

I want a game I can control and finish in my free times and still be able to enjoy and have an immersive narrative experience. Open world, 100 hours… too Skyrim or too WoW (even if offline) for me. Hopefully this is not Assassin’s Creed influence over KojiPro because we kind of saw it coming a while ago. Anyway, he never did something like that and hopefully this will have a lot of drama and interesting stuff to do inside those 100 hours instead of time based missions, finding hidden garbage, go from here to there and deliver this… and crap like that.

I look forward to hearing about Project Ogre, and whatever it may be in the coming days, months and years. But hearing that this game is an open-world, has me doubly fascinted with it. It also tells me that this is a porject that might not be seen until 2013 at the least.

@back_up, As always, clueless, Kojima already said that their new project is in works for all major platforms being PS3, PC and XBOX 360.
