Game of Thrones RPG trailer, details finally out

Wednesday, 21st December 2011 16:07 GMT By Andrew Groen

We’ve heard lots of rumors, but very little concrete information about the Game of Thrones RPG until today. Cyanide studios released some choice tidbits of information along with a new trailer showing the game in action. It was hardly the trailer we were hoping for, but it’ll do for now. It’s over two minutes long, but includes next to no gameplay footage. And the footage that does come from in-game play is just a character running in a perfectly straight line in a few different settings. For a game that’s due out in “early 2012” that’s a bit concerning.

However, there are some encouraging details for Song of Ice and Fire fans. To begin with, the game’s story is being developed “under the supervision” of George R.R. Martin. We don’t yet know what that actually means, but at least he’s being involved in the process.

The game is also being developed on Unreal Engine 3, and should be around 30 hours long. The storyline will follow Mors, a Night’s Watchmen, and Alester a Red Priest and will take players around Westeros to famous locales to meet equally famous characters. The game is being developed for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Not a fan of the art-direction. The characters really seem to be rather cartoony.

But anyway, we got Skyrim. Mods are coming in January, so any Fan will be served there.

I also think it’s time for a proper clothes-engine already. It’s embarrassing how far behind we are when it comes to that.

Just imagine running around Skyrim with a cape that reacts properly to the weather conditions. Fucking amazing.

And what’s R.R. Martin doing in the trailer at 1:51?

Just depend how good combat/skill tree/dialogs are going to be.

Hmmm, doesn’t look too bad actually. I just hope it doesn’t turn out to be yet another story-driven 3rd person action game with weak RPG elements.

Rich character development/progression and lots of dialogue + world interaction please.

My major thought is that they literally have no combat, RPG elements, or any substantive gameplay in this trailer whatsoever. The characters aren’t even animated doing anything more than running at the exact same speed in a straight line. Which means this may not even be an Alpha build. And it’s due out in a few months…on three different systems. I’ve got a sincerely bad feeling about this game.
