Report: Vita Japanese launch shipments at 700,000 units

Sony will have shipped 700,000 units of PlayStation Vita in Japan ahead of the handheld’s launch in the country tomorrow, one Japanese media outlet is saying.

Mainichi Digital, citing sources inside the company, is claiming that 500,000 units were expected for launch this weekend, but due to demand of pre-orders, Sony bolstered the number by an additional 200,000 units.

Japanese outlets Tsutaya, Yodobashi Camera and Bic Camera, having stopped taking pre-orders when they first began only to open again soon after, have said anyone can walk in and buy a unit without a pre-order.

Vita launches in the west on February 22.

Should be a good seller, if not great seller for Sony…in JP/Asia. It will be a hella lot slower in the west. Expect a burst of sales at launch and a slow trickle after.

If Sony & friends can keep a consistent amount of premium titles coming, I foresee a very successful future for the handheld despite the pessimistic views coming from the majority of analysts. I’m definitely looking at picking one up but I probably won’t get it ’til June.

half a million? here is your rekord lol. 3ds sold 200 000 in japan, but it took 37 weeks lol. still it was a hanheld rekord in japan. still the 3ds sold 200 000 in us in 1 week. but 700 000 is world rekord that crush the ps3, wii, xbox360 and all ds and psps. its a new rekord that is way beyond other launches

How can you mistake Australia with Japan, we’re that large country that’s separate from both the Americas & Afro-Eurasia while Japan is that little island hanging next to China.

The 3DS sold almost 400’000 at it’s release in JAPAN.

So true. Heck, PSP had nothing but Monster Hunter for ages and still kept on selling. With proper features, price and games, Vita can easily become a moderate success or even a huge one if Sony plays its cards right (Which they almost never do).
Also, second analog is PURE WIN.
