EA denies Garriott’s claims of new Ultima

Thursday, 15th December 2011 15:42 GMT By Andrew Groen

Old school gamers around the world felt a chill run up their spine a few days ago as Richard Garriott made comments that indicated he was in high-level talks with EA to revive the Ultima franchise. However, that may not be the case.

“I would love to have access to the Ultima property,” Garriott was quoted as saying on December 12. “We’ve had discussions at very high levels with Electronic Arts about access to the property. We’re in discussions with Electronic Arts even now about a possible marketing and distribution relationships and things of this nature.”

However, come December 15, EA isn’t singing the same tune. “No one at EA is discussing partnership or licensing opportunities related to the Ultima Online franchise,” said Jeff Brown of EA in an interview with IndustryGamers.

Unfortunately, we don’t have closure on this story even though we badly, badly want it. However, it’s worth noting that the policy of major publishers in recent years has been to outright lie to cover up leaks. So there’s definitely still some merit to the idea of an Ultima revival being in talks.

    Ultima Online is the best MMORPG in history of MMO games.

    I hope that Garriot will make another one and without casual shit where you kill a person and can’t take his loot like in ost of mainstream MMO’s.

    I got $100 that says they’re working on some F2P Facebook version of Ultima or Ultima Online. Is there anyone here stupid enough to bet against me?

    @1- I was there for launch of UO and it was meh….Came back years later, still meh…..
    The only MMO that kept me longer than 4 months was Wow at launch, and I have played the bulk of them.
    @2 – nope, I wouldn’t bet against you, I’d lose.

    I don’t understand EA at all. Hey lets make more Army of Two games, Medal of Honor games, and forget we own some of the greatest franchises in gaming’s history.
    Where is our new Ultima, Ultima Underworld, Wing Commander, Crusader, System Shock, Dungeon Keeper, Undying 2, Road Rage?

    @ 3: Couldn’t agree more. Would *love* to see new takes on Road Rash, Wing Commander and Ultima.
