Fortnite has freeform construction and destruction

Epic Games lead designer Lee Perry has dropped a number of teasing details on the recently-revealed Fortnite.

"Minecraft was an inspiration for sure," Perry said of the construction and defence sim on Twitter, but added:

"Minecraft lets you build anything, we are focusing on constructing 'buildings' specifically".

Despite this focus, Perry said the game contains plenty of freedom of expression.

"I see lots of questions asking if Fortnite is freeform construction. It is. It's not scripted or just boarding up existing structures," he said.

"And it stands to reason if you can build a world, anything can be destroyed," he added.

Asked whether destruction would occur in real time, he replied in the affirmative.

"A good trailer example is the building being blown up for resources, yeah, not trailer fakery or scripted events when in game."

"Chances? High," he said to a question about "weapon crafting/traps, lvl system, underground exploration, Boss fights, team survival mode, rare loot".

As for the game's unconventionally-spelt title, Perry noted that "it's very hard to trademark a normal word like Fortnight".

Alas, no word yet on which platforms or when Fortnite will release - possibly because Epic is chasing a publishing deal - but Perry did mention that the game has only been in the works for "a few short months", although there's already "so much of it".

Finally, Perry revealed that Fortnite is the work of "a crazy organic old school war-room of passionate devs" within Epic.

"It's like an indie group set up shop in the corner of the building," he explained.
