MGS Rising VGA trailer confirms Platinum as dev

Metal Gear Solid: Rising has been formally re-unveiled at the VGAs, confirming initial E3 rumours that Platinum Games is developing the title.

The news comes hours after the trailer managed to leak online before the show.

The video shows PMC groups similar to MGS4 and in previous trailers for the game, as well as ninjas in suits.

Previously confirmed to be a prequel to MGS4 and a sequel to MGS2, it’ll now actually take place after Guns of the Patriots, with Raiden returning to his ninja form.

Quinton Flynn, Raiden’s voice actor in MGS2 and MGS4, also makes an appearance, despite showing concern earlier this year he may not be involved with the title.

This will be Platinum’s first title being developed that won’t be published by Sega. Previously, all of its efforts, including Bayonetta, Madworld and Vanquish to name a few, were published by the company.

Its next effort, Anarchy Reigns, launches under Sega in early 2012.

Rising was announced at E3 2009 at Microsoft’s press conference, but was confirmed to be a multi-plat affair. Gameplay footage from when it was being made at KP wouldn’t emerge until a year later at E3, followed by a TGS demo.

Since then, it’s gone quiet. Until now, obviously.

MGS; Rising launches on PS3, 360 and PC in 2012. Trailer’s below. New shots are here.

@48 But combat look like Devil may cry/Bayonetta unlike 2010 trailer which looked like sword was using just as secondary and to so flashy and so many hits to kill one guy IMO.
Which rise a question:What is Konami doing instead?

@48
Exact same characters? In MGS4 Raiden was quiet, depressive and suicidal. In this trailer he seems to be a wise cracking smart ass. Even in MGS2 he wasnt like that.

I’m sorry but the only thing thats “moot” here is your opinion on anything related to Platinum because you’re such a fanboy. And i dont mean that as a little insult, you literally worship the guys.

Yes because the mooing robots are akin to a Ray. One of which nearly went onto kill Snake when he was in Rex, look I remember Gray Fox under Rex’s foot, I remember Kuwabara bullet hands. Nothing before was this level of “one of my Japanese animes”.

That scene on the train, running on the ceiling, nothing looks like MGS4. Nothing.

Ac!d 2 has closer visuals than this.

^ Yeah, the past MGS games have always managed to be overall very ‘western’ with just enough of a Japanese hint. Thats what made them interesting. This on the other hand is… Well, anime.

The exact anime shot was the cutting Ray in half thing, in the scene that IM mentioned each wound and attack that Raiden inflicts on a moo moo defined by the length of his sword and where he hit it.

Much like the choppy choppy bits appear to be in this video, then its all “The power of my friends gives me the strength to cut the very air with my blade!!”

“I WILL CUT THE HEAVENS!!”

/lasor sword beam.

Its also worth pointing out that every fight Raiden had in MGS4 ended with him getting his ass kicked. Yeah, he cut up some Geckos, but he still needed Snake to take a shot and save him before Vamp put him in a critical state.

@51 The sword was secondary? I guess that’s why it was the focus of *every* single preview of the game then.

Seriously, now you people are just making shit up.

You can’t assume there won’t be any stealth in the game simply from a teaser trailer anyway, but this is Raiden. He’s a cyborg ninja with a katana. He’s not going to sneak. This isn’t meant to be the same game.

@52 I was talking about how they look. As for how he acts, do you remember the part of the story in MGS4 where Raiden disappears for half the story to be “fixed”? That’s when this game is set. You can even hear a voice that is clearly Dr. Pettrovich in the voiceovers.

Do you actually think the story isn’t going to be mandated by Konami? It obviously is. The framework for it was set down intentionally in MGS4 *solely* to accommodate this game.

Anyway, have you guys even considered for a few seconds *why* this has been outsourced to Platinum? The game had barely progressed whole being developed inhouse for years, so much so that it even went through a change of producers in the middle of the project. It’s pretty bloody obvious that Konami had a nice tool, but didn’t have a staff with the talent to implement it into a full blown game.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT!?

First GSC closes down its studio, then Bioware apparently starts making RTS and now Platinum making a Metal Gear Solid Game? Can it get any worse?

Rising was the first MGS game in a long time i looked forward to … this, this is just unbelievable. What the fuck was Hideo smoking? Was he tortured? Did someone blackmail him or something?

For people who didn’t get the chance to see this abomination of a trailer:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xmwd5f_videogames

80′s rock music you’d only find in Dynasty Warrior games, crunch-worthy dialogs, already uninteresting story and just fucking stupid character-design. Even the gameplay looks horribly anime and uninspired.

Nothing even hints at it being a Metal Gear Solid game.

I remember the Original Developer once said how the game would be about just cutting people in half. Instead Platinum choose the dumbest and cheapest thing someone could imagine. Exactly what i would’ve expected from them.

Man, i can’t believe this, this is just messed up. I mean this is a joke. This has to be a joke, right? I was already beginning to fear that something might be up with the game, but this? This is beyond horrible. Even Team Ninja would’ve been a better choice. What the fuck were they-

you know what? I can’t. I fucking speechless. They must have been mindfucked when they decided to give this game to a developer like Platinum.

I don’t pretend to have played or enjoyed any Metal Gear games although i was looking forward to Rising after the first trailer.

After seeing this trailer however, all i can see is average, average, average.

I know you enjoy seeing Developers and producers trying a different direction with projects (as do I), but how about Platinum games taking a different one?!

This looks almost identical “cookie cutter” style with all their other titles. When handling something as important as Metal Gear, did they really think a Ninja Gaiden / DMC / insert over-the-top hack and slash, would be good enough?!

Fans of the series have a right to be pissed off. That is until they show MGS 5 running on PS4! :)

@74 It’s a game whose lead star is a robotic ninja that wields a katana and has a body made of 90% metal.

It was *always* going to be a hack and slash. Anyone who thought otherwise was deluding themselves.

I think the worst (funniest) thing about people’s criticism of his trailer is the fact that they actually consider the standard Metal Gear intelligent in the first place…

#76

I like the look of this allot! And the fact that Platinum is making it is even better news, Bayonetta was amazing and it seems the perfect fitt for this game.
We probably diden’t hear about Rising for a long time becuase the Metal Gear team can’t do action games that well. They ran into trouble and came up with the perfect solution: get an action game studio to make this.
Means they can focus on the stealth series in house.

I stopped playing MGS4 after about a couple of hours because i was fed up of being spoon fed, pseudo-intelligent babble.

I knew i’d mainly playing it to watch cut scenes but the gameplay in between really wasn’t upto scratch for me.

Maybe i’ll go back to it sometime although i don’t really like having to force myself to play games.

Huh, wait. That wasn’t just a bad dream? Oh man … :(

I have to admit Raiden is one of my favorite character in the Metal Gear Solid Universe. Yes, he gets emo from time to time, but so does everybody in MGS. Hearing him say things like “Let it rip” just makes me want to puke.

I seriously think even Michael Bay would say “Stop, these dialogs are stupid.”

It’s fucking roadrunner. I expect Egoraptor to deliver something like this, a parody of what could go wrong with MGR if you give a to a developer with brain damage.

Well, that looked much better than what they showed last year, obviously the visuals ‘re downgraded with it being properly in-game instead of some boring tech demo where he just cut melons.

I’ll take Platinum’s clever combat over Konami’s pseudo stealth any day of the week too.

MGS was radically different to what the old MSX titles were about so why not indeed.

This game looks amazing! Whats with all the hate? Did we all watch the same trailer? Pretty sure I saw Raiden fucking suplexing a metal gear.

Any self respecting MGS fan should at least be optimistic enough to hope that Kojima wouldn’t attach his name to an shitty product, cuz last time I checked he has a pretty good track record.

And how about some optimism for a game set in the MGS universe? You know, the same universe that’s always been so rich with story. Maybe this game will be a mind fuck on a Matrix level?

Not to mention, that trailer had a distinctly Japanese feel to it, and its about god damned time! Im getting pretty tired of an entire generation of video games that are developed decidedly western in order to make $$$$$.

Open your minds people.

Ok first off If this game is un-canon to the MGS universe then I will be fine. If it takes place on a string theory bases where IDK maybe Solid Snake is dead then I would be fine with that. But, Originally they we’re saying this would be attached to the MGS storyline between 2 and 4. And from what the trailer shows it contradicts THEE ENTIRE FLOW OF MGS 1-4.

For instance in MGS4 when Raiden is Pawned by Vamp. This Raiden would do MORE then Own him. When Raiden was captured by all those Geckos, This Raiden Would ANNIHILATE them before they could do anything! This Raiden could own a MGRAY with 2 arms So OUTER HAVEN WOULD HAVE BEEN A CHALLENGE with 1 Arm.

Why are they giving him an eyepatch? He has NO CONNECTIONS TO BIG BOSS OUTSIDE OF SOLIDUS. And Solidus didn’t get the eye patch until after the harrier incident on the Big Shell. That Eye patch MAKES NO SINCE!

Jack the Ripper is the only thing that make’s since out of that ENTIRE trailer. We would actually get to explore the past side of Jack. But, Everything else contradicts the entire flow of 4. I already am 50/50 with Platinum because Bayonetta was utter shit but Vanquished was a great game.

Hell after Vanquished I kinda could see them making a Rising game. BUT NOT LIKE THIS! I too like over the top action styles like everyone else but there is still a feel to it.

I just don’t want my favorite series to be destroyed in the blink of an Eye.

#85

YoungZer0
11/12/11, 2:20 pm

@83: “You know, the same universe that’s always been so rich with story.”

Yeah, i guess you saw a different trailer, because all i saw is Platinum taking a huge dump on exactly that. Hideo created a huge world, with lots of remarkable and rememberable characters. This doesn’t even try to be a Metal Gear Game.

Have you not heard the same dialog lines i have? You can’t fix that. Platinum Games just shows us again that they are indeed incapable of delivering a game that isn’t just insultingly stupid.

Why the fuck don’t they just hire a writer? I mean all the stories of their previous game have been a disaster. The dialogs, characters and character-design have been too.

This is supposed to be a Metal Gear Game. Set in the same Universe as MGS4 and MGS2. This is not how Raiden would talk. We know that, because unlike characters like Dante, he has depth. We know that he hates his past, hates his history as a child-soldier. We know that he doesn’t enjoy fighting, but he does it because it has to be done.

We know that he likes to go emo from time to time.

Nothing in trailer reminds me of Raiden. Lines like “This is gonna be fun.” or “Let it rip”? Raiden would never do that!

This is the usual-embarrassing-macho-guy we all saw in stupid games like Vanquish and Gears. And this is exactly what we don’t need: Another stupid game.

Hideo should go over there and bitchslap every single of these assholes, because they are about to destroy what Metal Gear stood for and make it to a mediocre mass of hyper-bullshit.

At least hire a fucking writer, you 8-year olds.

@84 – Yea he has an eye patch, so wouldn’t that little clue insinuate that he lost his eye, and all but confirm that this game takes place AFTER MGS4? Maybe he somehow gained an eye between this game and MGS4. Also, you’re going NUTS over a story you know nothing about. NOTHING, NADDA, ZIP! A 3 minute trailer and your ready to say “it contradicts THEE ENTIRE FLOW OF MGS 1-4.” Get a grip bud!

@85 – Its pretty clear you have a hard-on for these devs, so Im not going to bother wasting my time. I just worked a 12 hour night shift and Im ready for bed. I’ll just reiterate the same thing I said above. YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS GAME OR STORY!! All anyone that isnt clairvoyant, or totally fucking insane, can reasonably infer from that 3 minute trailer is that Raiden uses his sword to dice people up. You want to play the guessing game about everything else until you go crazy, and probably get it all wrong, then by all means.

@86 – Right, I’ll just stick to my 1st person military shooters and my 3rd person monster shooters. You know what, maybe I’ll just play my sandbox superhero games, cuz they’re all so fucking original too.

#87 please read again what I said before you start jumping into your half assed analysis.
1. I know everything about the MGS timeline Why? BECAUSE I FUCKING LOVE THE FRANCHISE! So please don’t sit here and tell me I know nothing about metal gear you know nothing about me.
2. The Eye patch is symbolic in the Metal Gear Franchise and also has story relevance in the series towards a distinctive feature of big boss and 1 of the reasons Old Snake has the Solid Eye. So Raiden having an Eye patch is FUCKING stupid. That is not raiden, if anything he would hold something that was a homage towards Frank Jager or Olga. The Eye patch is pointless for Jack as a whole.
3. The trailer immediately contradicts the SoP system that was in place if in fact this game is to take place between 2 and 4. HOW? Because the Technology far exceeds that of MGS4 and therefore renders the technology outside of SoP’s Scope.(potentially)
4. Raiden at the end of MGS4 get’s his body back. So if this takes place after that then that means something has led Raiden to Abandon his family again. Going against his words to his Son and Rose about being there for them. Making him a douchebag until further details are released.
5. The Physics alone contradicts his capabilities if held between 2 and 4. Which that is where the intentions of the story were to go.
6. I also stated that if this is like a string theory principle(meaning uncanny to the real MGS storyline) then I would be ok with that and therefore look further into it. but if it goes into being canny then I really just think they screwed up a great potential that Raiden had for the sake of an Action thriller.

So please don’t come in here trying to bash my opinion on the matter when I can see complete contradictions to the storyline of the saga. If this is near future then they can easily screw up a potential in reviving Solid snake or create a great way to bring him back.

@91 Regarding Point #4, I think it ought to be pointed out that Jack & Rose also said the very same thing at the end of MGS2 – that it was time for them to finally focus on what mattered and live for themselves… and yet by MGS4 he had already abandoned everyone he cared for and completely destroyed his life and body.

Guy has commitment issues. Just sayin’.

Regarding #3 and #5, the game is now set after MGS4, as explained on the official site, so most of your assumed “contradictions” are now moot.

#93

MegaGeek1

@91 – Okay, you know your MGS and are a true fan. I cant respect that. That, however, wasn’t my point, and I didn’t half ass analyze anything. My point was you have no idea how this game will play into the MGS timeline. NO FUCKING IDEA! Unless of course you developed it. So just give the game the benefit of the doubt for now. Or, continue to drive yourself crazy over rumours and speculation. I don’t give a fuck.

@92 Actually none of my points are moot. Because they we’re all relevant before official announcements. And considering that after reading the article they recently posted. This trailer surely didn’t do the game any justice. As for just about any game, I’ll wait until the player reviews start pouring out before I decide to spend my money on the game. Never been a huge fan of MGS, mainly from the lack of playing many of the games, but I really enjoyed #4 despite how boring it can be, especially at the start. I did play a little of Portable Ops before my PSP was stolen & really liked it & loved how you could arrange your own militia group, love micro management, even if it means just picking a bunch of guys before the game & switching in between them.

One of the things that caught my eye about rising was the restraint option. Kojima was going for a game that incorporated an option for killing with/without skill or dismantling your opponent with pure skill making everything cutable. I loved the fact yo could cut someones gun up without killing them and scaring the rest of the people. Now it’s just Mindless, It’s a platinum game.

Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy mindless games. But, I thought Konami had something special in the works. Now this is just another beat’em up.

@99: They had that planned? Didn’t know that. God-damn that sounds nice. A way not kill humans? That’s something i always appreciated about the previous MGS titles. I really hope it’s more than just mindlessly killing though. But i kind of doubt that. Looks like the cutting isn’t a huge feature anymore, just a finishing move.
