MGS Rising VGA trailer confirms Platinum as dev

Metal Gear Solid: Rising has been formally re-unveiled at the VGAs, confirming initial E3 rumours that Platinum Games is developing the title.

The news comes hours after the trailer managed to leak online before the show.

The video shows PMC groups similar to MGS4 and in previous trailers for the game, as well as ninjas in suits.

Previously confirmed to be a prequel to MGS4 and a sequel to MGS2, it’ll now actually take place after Guns of the Patriots, with Raiden returning to his ninja form.

Quinton Flynn, Raiden’s voice actor in MGS2 and MGS4, also makes an appearance, despite showing concern earlier this year he may not be involved with the title.

This will be Platinum’s first title being developed that won’t be published by Sega. Previously, all of its efforts, including Bayonetta, Madworld and Vanquish to name a few, were published by the company.

Its next effort, Anarchy Reigns, launches under Sega in early 2012.

Rising was announced at E3 2009 at Microsoft’s press conference, but was confirmed to be a multi-plat affair. Gameplay footage from when it was being made at KP wouldn’t emerge until a year later at E3, followed by a TGS demo.

Since then, it’s gone quiet. Until now, obviously.

MGS; Rising launches on PS3, 360 and PC in 2012. Trailer’s below. New shots are here.

gosh, what they have done with the title…

OH MY GOD… Platinum Games… It looks like a complete crap compared to previous trailer that was made by Kojima Productions.

It’s not Metal Gear at all even if they just deleted “solid” in it.

Oh.My.god.

Why? Why Konami?

Platinum Games better work on Bayonetta 2, but with this one… It’s just so meh… for the Metal Gear setting.

Platinum Games, huh? It’ll be absolutely amazing then.

I don’t see anything Metal Gear in this, i see Ninja Gaiden and i see Bayonetta in it, but it’s not doing anything for me. Didn’t the developers promised sneaking? I sure don’t see it.

I see only Dinasty Warriors with crazy Bayonetta cut scenes.

Horrible piece of trash.

Bayonetta was excellent, but this one is just trash.

Platinum does make great action games with fast movements and combat, but Metal Gear never really was about that in particular.
im very afraid they fuck this up now :(

I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt as it is Platinum and it is MGS, but my god, what a horrible first impression that trailer is. :/

What exactly is wrong with this trailer? Because I’m not seeing it.

Looks interesting for a brainless hack’n'slash game, but its still meant to be within the Metal Gear series, and in that regard it looks fucking terrible.

Also, the original concept seemed a lot more interesting, and by that i mean it didnt sound it was Ninja Gaiden 4.

@12 Raiden still looks like Raiden. The setting looks identical to MGS4′s. And the gameplay clearly isn’t just “face and attack”. In fact, it looks like Raiden is about to counter that gecko’s attack just before one of the scene’s end.

Not to mention this is a teaser trailer. You can’t assuming the game will or won’t have subtle stealth sections. I can totally see this having stealth kills.

@Erthazus I completely agree with you, this trailer is very disappointing. And what happen to the grpahics? The game doesn’t even look as good as it did when it was shown at E3 a couple of years ago. I don’t want to jump the gun, but I have a bad feeling about this title. The direction they’re taking is bad, real bad. The MGS series has always been about strong story telling and that is definitely not PG strong points. Damn I was so amp to see this game today, only to be disappointed by this shit.

That was the funniest piece of Jap FAP cyborg ninjas bullshit I’ve seen in awhile. Was Raiden in heels? He look so macho!! Lolololol!!! Fuck me, but the Power Ranger Samurai want their costumes back!

Still it’s a world away from Kojima’s po-faced war is business, lets look at some gun porn posturing I guess…

@16 ” Cheesy voice acting, cheesy music and The REVENGEANCE!?!?”

So… just like every other Metal Gear Solid game ever made, then?

@18 Raiden had those “heels” in MGS4. It’s where he attaches his blades.

Yeah, the voice acting really stood out, seems Platinum specialize in bad voice work. I mean MGS4 wasnt exactly the best there is but it was several cuts above (seewatididthar?) what we hear in this full-on 3min non-teaser trailer.

And of course we all know that with Platinum’s infamous voice acting comes their infamous story telling and plot lines, and unless Kojima has some more to say at the VGA’s, he isnt working on the game himself in anyway.

…Sorry but i have no hope for this game, it looks like a cool fight sim but that isnt what i’m looking for in MGS. The first trailer looked a lot more slower paced and by the looks of it i’m betting the ‘cut anything, any time’ moniker has been reduced to ‘Slice up enemies with brutal finisher moves!’.

I’d be more impressed if this was a new IP or a sequel to an actual hack’n'slash game.

The most upsetting part, is that someone sat in a conference room and thought that this was a great idea to take the series.

@Ireland Mike

Nothing is wrong with the trailer if this is the type of genre you like in your games. Most people, (including myself) that have been following the MGS series know that the game is about story with some addictive gameplay mechanics that includes both action and stealth elements. This trailer shows nothing but “over the top non-stop action” with some God-awful voice acting that has PG written all over it and the MGS series was never about that. It’s evident in your comment that you’re not as heavy into the MGS series as some of us are seeing how you see there’s nothing wrong the trailer. And you know what that’s totally fine.

#28

Ireland Michael
10/12/11, 10:13 pm

@24 Metal Gear Solid has always been camp. Do I *have* to remind you how tight Snake’s outfit was around his butt in MGS4? Or remind you of the line “Do you think love can bloom on the battlefield?”.

Complaining about a Metal Gear being camp, cheesy and tacky is like complaining about the sky being blue. You’re free to do so, but it’s always been that way…

This game was never intended to be Metal Gear Solid Raiden, and this cutting system was detailed years ago, just slower. There’s absolutely nothing here that should surprise anyone whose followed the game’s progress up to now.

Bloody hell. That was a disappointment.

I mean this game could work in the way that Bayonetta did, in some sort of out-there universe with hack and slash mechanics and cheesy characters/dialogue. But as a METAL GEAR game… wow, just wow.

Like how did this piss poor trailer even get past Kojima?

Gutted. Just gutted.

@ #27 if u are a true fan like u say then you should have leraned something from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and how laugable was raiden as a charter i mean come one lets face it we all know it that will ended like this
it makes no sens having stealth elements with a charter that have a blade as long as in the crusade era

im a veteran of MGS as well and i totality support this new game mechanics

a but the story there is nothing to look here that’s why peoples loved mgs4 cos it told the end of a warrior snake died
now have fun playing remakes or 3ds titles that go back in time the main story of the game the hart have stooped working

@27 ” It’s evident in your comment that you’re not as heavy into the MGS series as some of us are seeing how you see there’s nothing wrong the trailer.”

The only thing “evident” right now mate is your tendency to make broad assumptions out of flimsy connections. I have played and completed every single Metal Gear title ever made – including all the spin-off. Many of them multiple times.

I’m just not adverse to people actually trying something different with an established name. I have no desire to play the same old shit over and over and over again.

It’s the very attitude being portrayed by people in this news story that is the reason we get the same old shitty war games and sports titles regurgitated onto the market on a yearly basis.

It probably didnt get past Kojima because he wasnt there to check it, he’s made it quite clear (unless this changes tonight) that he has nothing to do with the game. The only reason he keeps getting shoved on-stage is because he’s the face of the franchise.

Remember this one trailer? GIVE IT BACK NAO!
Looking at the Platinum stuff i just can’t think of quality.

Besides, RAIDEN IS CYBORG NINJA, I expected something with a little more subtlety. You know, like a ninja. But not Bayonetta or Dinasty Warriors, Warrior.

“Revengeance” my ASS.

#41

10/12/11, 10:56 pm

@38 The cutscene animations are fine.

In game, the MGS games have *never* had good animation. They have always been rigged, stiff and unresponsive. Uncharted they are not.

#42

10/12/11, 11:00 pm

You know why people disliked Twin Snakes, because it had goofy shit like Snake running up missiles and kicking them back to where they came from.

Now im not trying to say that MGS is gritty or realistic or serious, what im trying to say is that this game is taking place in another World from MGS4. Sure everything might look the same but in the same universe that had that microwave tunnel sequence you can’t have running up the side of a Ray and cutting it in half with a sword.

Im sure it’ll be fun enough it’ll just be fun in the MadWorld way instead of the Vanquish/Bayonetta way.

#43

Erthazus
10/12/11, 11:00 pm

@41, sorry but you are incorrect, MGS4 had amazing animations in every aspect there is.
In the cut scenes, in the gameplay animations were one of the best.

to this day it’s a great looking game on the PS3.

this one is not and everyone see that. Stop being a defensive Platinum fanboy. We got it, you like Platinum Games, i also like some of their games like Bayonetta. But this one is not a quality title especially after this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtM3PGyiQUc

You know why people get angry about this and DmC because if you removed the name from the trailer no one would be able to tell they were related.

Show someone Shattered Memories and theres a good chance they’ll be able to guess its a Silent Hill game.

I want new experiences more than anything, its why I have such a huge collection of games but im not going to sacrifice a series well known strengths and perceptions because it makes the title a safer bet for publishers.

Fuck cheapening whats come before to sucker in fans.

@45+1, Too true. You hear Metal Gear & your expectations are set. I bet a few people were expecting a Tenchu style game, but in the Metal Gear universe. Stealthily taking on gun toting goons with sweet sword skills…

…and they seem to be getting a arcade hack and slasher… I can see why their disappointed…

#48

Ireland Michael
10/12/11, 11:20 pm

@42 Yeah, let’s completely forgot about that one sequence in MGS4 where Raiden takes out a number of geckos while jumping and bouncing around the screen like a cyborg on acid…

Your point is moot. Raiden did the exact crazy shit in MGS4 that he’s doing here.

@45 Exact same characters. Almost identical character designs. Visually identical locations. Enemy units with no visual changes (the geckos).

Yup, totally unrecognisable.
