Wired's Kohler stands by Miyamoto retirement story

Wired's gaming editor Chris Kohler has stuck with his guns over its story yesterday Shigeru Miyamoto was to take a partial retirement and go into a smaller role inside Nintendo.

The publication posted a story from an interview with Miyamoto, in which it said he'd be "retiring from my current position," instead looking to do smaller projects inside the company and take on "even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself."

He added in the piece that "unless I say that I’m retiring, I cannot nurture the young developers."

Nintendo denied this was the case, saying his comments were a "misunderstanding." In the wake of the news, shares were down by 2%.

Kohler's still standing behind his story, though.

“Miyamoto’s comments as presented in our story are exactly what Miyamoto said, and presented with the full context of his remarks,” Kohler told G4 in a statement. “We are absolutely standing by those statements as reported."

He added Miyamoto's translator was Yasuhiro Minagawa of Nintendo, who's been "Miyamoto’s translator for a very, very, very long time.

"I did an interview with Miyamoto in 2002, and Mr. Minagawa was Miyamoto’s translator then. It is Nintendo’s translator, not ours."
