Warner Montreal working on more DC Comics games thanks to Batman’s success

Friday, 9th December 2011 13:33 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Warner Montreal has said it’s working on bringing new DC Comics-based games to the market due thanks to the popularity of Rocksteady’s Batman series, and the bang-up job the studio did with the two titles.

Speaking with Canadian Business, studio head Martin Carrier said Rocksteady’s games have “changed people’s perceptions” of games based on comic book heroes, and because of this, the public is not “satisfied anymore with sub-par superhero games.”

“Now, it’s like they should be better than all the other games,” he said. “We’re definitely working closely with DC on different titles, yet to be announced. It’s one of the reasons we talk to Geoff Johns and Jim Lee [the comic publisher heads] on a regular basis. It’s interesting for our geeky side to be in touch with those guys, especially now that they’ve relaunched all the 52 [comics].

“It’s a good time to be working with DC. There’s so much energy going on there. So yeah, [we're in] the triple-A space and the casual online space.”

Due to the success of the Montreal studio, it has gone from having four employees to targeting 300 employees by 2015. It also hasn’t been hard to find good people due to Rocksteady’s success.

“One of the things that really helped us is the trend of where Warner was going on the game side,” he explained. “Batman: Arkham Asylum had come out and that had really changed peoples’ perceptions of the superhero game. So when we’d talk to [potential employees] and say, ‘Hey we’re going to be working with DC,’ they could see potential there.”

Now you just need to find studios as good as Rocksteady to make them.

Rocksteady has done to the comic book games what Nolan did to comic book movies. This doesn’t mean much because of what Warner did with Green Lantern. If the owner of Nolan’s Batman can’t learn from that work, how can anyone else do it? BECAUSE: Suits never learn and that’s why even after TDK they went to the same stupid “family friendly” “full of cheap jokes” superhero movie design bad hollywood flicks for the Lantern.

Too bad every DC comic series outside of Batman sucks.

@3 What?!? Are you crazy? Green Lantern rocks and so does The Flash (I’m just talking about comics, not adaptations), not to mention the one and only good Superman comic book: Red Son

@4 Agreed. Both Flash and GL are really awesome character but sadly the former had a crappy movie adaptation that ruined it for general audiences and the latter hasn’t had much mainstream success. Man that cancelled Flash game looked rather sweet. Why is it that stuff like that along with THQ’s first person Avengers game get cancelled why Activision keeps releasing uber crappy Transformers and Spidey games based on movies (Non movie Spidey and Transy games excluded of course).

you will need really good game devs to pull it off. Batman is just one good super hero game. I have to point many other superheros have not been that success full.
