Ryan: Insomniac going multi-platform isn’t “the end of the world by any means”

Friday, 2nd December 2011 18:23 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Sony’s Jim Ryan has said that in an “ideal world,” the firm would have preferred that Insomniac stayed exclusive to PS3 development, but the firm harbors no ill will and is “still friends” with the Resistance developer.

Speaking with OPM, Ryan said one of Sony’s greatest strengths is its internal studios, so when Insomniac announced it was going multi-platform, it wasn’t “the end of the world by any means” – especially when it has Naughty Dog brandishing the Sony banner and “a bunch of stuff” on the way as well.

“When you look at the critical acclaim that Uncharted 3 got and also the number of units that are selling it’s just great,” he said. “Having a developer like that to showcase our platforms, exclusive to our formats is really, really great.

“There’s a bunch of stuff at the back end of the year – I’ll just tease you with this because I not going to tell you what because I can’t – which I’m very excited by, and you’ll hear about [it] over the coming months. [It'll] give you plenty to write about.”

“not the end of the world by any means”

    Yeah? No shit.

Insomniac brought very little to the PS3 when they were exclusive. They brought some “okay” games, but nothing of the sort that Sony’s internal studios are bringing.

@Razor: in my opinion, Resistance 3 came very close to Killzone 3, and Ratchet & Clank: Crack in Time is one of the best platformers I’ve ever played.

To be honest, I don’t care if Insomniac goes multiplatform, as long as the games don’t become more action- and mainstream focused. What happens a lot when a dev goes multiplat.

@razorthroughisass: Sure let’s see. Resistance 3 is one of the best FPSs of the year, then you have the POS that is notFamous2 with such a terribad 10 fps, and what that POS Ratchet game by a 2nd-2nd-dev of P(O)SP Games? Shure, Phony has pleanty of good Devs and Ips. Sure it has… lol.

You’re joking right? The Resistance franchise on the PS3 has sold probably close to 7 million games and the Ratchet & Clank franchise around 4 million. 11 million in exclusive sales isn’t to be scoffed at.

@5, It’s a troll that no one has banned yet, all it cares about is flaming the PS3 because it’s an ignorant little child who thinks with a closed mind, anything not on the 360 must automatically suck- without trying it. He’s no smarter than those soccer hooligans who start fights with those who prefer the other team- except that he’s not being physically violent, probably would though if he wasn’t too much of a fat arse to leave his chair.

To be honest, i wouldn’t even care if they go 360 only. Resistance has been nothing but a shitty series, from start to finish. The definition of mediocrity. Boring story. Boring Design. Boring Characters. Hell even the weapons were boring. Just compare them to games like Turok 2.

@7 I disagree with you the Resistance series are good for me, not stellar but good, and are different than a common FPS. I have the 3 games.-
