FFXIII-2 cinematic shows epic Lightning-Caius fight in Valhalla
Square Enix has released a two-minute video of one of the Final Fantasy XIII-2 cinematics, showing an epic battle between Lightning and new baddie Caius, which takes place in Valhalla. As is the Square norm, it’s in flabgobinglytastic CG. Get watching below the break.
FFXIII-2′s out in Japan on December 15, with a US launch on January 31 and a European launch on February 3, for PS3 and 360.

I Am Alive screenshots show various shades of grey
Ubisoft’s released some new I Am Alive screens, showing climbing, standing on the edge of things, hitting things, shooting things with a bow and arrow and more. Grey is a definite theme. The survival game, which has a development history as long as your arm, releases for XBLA and PSN this winter.

Report: Bigpoint nets €2 million from one in-game item in DarkOrbit MMO
Bigpoint has made over €2 million this month on an in-game item purchase in the company’s free-to-play, browser-based space shooter MMO, DarkOrbit.

Epic, Monolith vets announce Strange Games
A pack of six developers, who’s experience includes Epic Games, Monolith and Yager, have announced the formation of Strange Games. Its first title is puzzler Demolicious, which will release on iOS and Android later this year. The majority of the team at Strange are still working on AAA projects, but Ken Mayfield, currently working on Spec Ops: The Line, says he’s “hoping we can concentrate on ourselves after this, after we release Demolicious.”
The identities of the other five people involved are being kept secret until they wrap their work on their current projects. Thanks, Eurogamer.

Edmondson brothers take Thumbstar board roles ahead of Newcastle expansion
GI.Biz is reporting that ex-Reflections bosses Gareth and Martin Edmondson have taken board roles at mobile studio Thumbstar Games. The pair, who were both ex-studio director and creative director at the Ubisoft-owned studio respectively, join as the company prepares to make an expansion up to Newcastle. Gareth comes in as CEO, while Martin, who had originally invested in the Liverpool-based company, will be chief creative officer. News of Gareth’s departure hit last week, but Martin’s exit was not publicised.

Spec Ops: The Line shows off story, gameplay videos
CVG‘s gone live with gameplay and story “montage” videos of Spec Ops: The Line, showing the Yager third-person shooter’s big aspects, including its setting in Dubai. Nolan North’s on voice control again for main character Captain Walker. Man’s got to provide bread, and all that. Videos are after the break.
Spec Ops: The Line launches next spring for PS3, 360 and PC.

Unit 13 gets first trailer following last night’s unveil

Doom 3 source code available now
Id, as promised, has released the source code for Doom 3. A delay was threatened when tech director John Carmack recently tweeted that lawyers for Bethesda were “skittish about the patent issue” with a trick called Carmack’s Reverse that was used in the full game, but the law, quite clearly, is an ass. It’s now available from GitHub. Get to it.

Original Silent Hill 2 voicework available in HD Collection
Put down your pitchfork, fanboy. Konami understands how the newly-recorded voice acting in the Silent Hill HD Collection offends your very being, and have included an option to switch it off. Unfortunately, “technical and logistical” constraints mean Silent Hill 3 only supports the new voices.
The Silent Hill HD Collection, which collects the second and third games, is expected on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in January.
