Doom 3 source code available now

Wednesday, 23rd November 2011 07:55 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Id, as promised, has released the source code for Doom 3. A delay was threatened when tech director John Carmack recently tweeted that lawyers for Bethesda were “skittish about the patent issue” with a trick called Carmack’s Reverse that was used in the full game, but the law, quite clearly, is an ass. It’s now available from GitHub. Get to it.

Thanks, Gamefront.

Looks awesome, i’ve found some redundancy at a few places, but in general it is an absolutely stellar job, by Carmack & Co, there is comments, it is well structured, and all in all, it is extremely easy to read and understand!

So can this be compiled to play the game? :D

Probably, although you’d not get much out of it unless you already own all the assets and level data, etc. I surmise they’re not included in the package. :)

@2 Nope, but you can create the best mods for the game now, or even a total conversion completely unrelated to Doom.

As the big README states: “This source release does not contain any game data, the game data is still covered by the original EULA and must be obeyed as usual.”
