UK charts: MW3 top, first-week sales less then Black Ops
Modern Warfare 3, unsurprisingly, has gone top of the UK charts following its $400 million launch last week.

What is surprising, however, is that its first week sales are down by 1.5 percent on last year’s Black Ops. Revenue is up by 1.6 percent, though.
The particular week between November 6-12, according to ChartTrack, has been the biggest ever in the UK by making £120.8 million, no doubt spurred on by the releases of MW3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which comes second.
Activision announced on Friday it had sold 6.5 million units of the shooter in its opening 24 hours in the US and UK.
Chart-Track initially confirmed this morning it moved “just under” 2 million units and made £83.1 million in revenue in its first five days in the UK, making it the biggest entertainment launch ever in the UK than the last four Harry Potter films combined, but has since said the figures are “unverified.”
360 ruled the roost in terms of platform breakdown, gaining 59% of sales, with PS3 grabbing 40%, which only leaves a split of 1% between the retail PC version and the Wii version.
Skyrim, meanwhile, is Bethesda’s biggest opening week in the UK by twice as much as Fallout: New Vegas last October, with 360 winning the majority of platform share, becoming the fifth biggest launch in the UK after MW3, FIFA 12, Battlefield 3 and Gears of War 3.
Full top ten for the week ending November 12 is below. Last week’s data is here.
- Modern Warfare 3
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Battlefield 3
- FIFA 12
- Just Dance 3
- Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
- Moshi Monsters
- Batman: Arkham City
- Zumba Fitness
- Wii Party

Is that a crack in CoD’s iron shell made out of massive sales or just a matter of time before sales pick up?

Also, WTF is “Moshi Monsters”!? Seriously, it’s the first time I’ve even heard of this game.

@3 That’s the thing, what if everyone who actually wanted to buy CoD were the ones to preorder and now sharing with their friends that the game is like MW2 so they could just play that? I read an interesting article in Xbox World which gave CoD a clear signal “Evolve or die out like Guitar Hero”.

Chart-Track’s just said there’s an error in its Modern Warfare 3 figures. Not sure if it’s sales or revenue, but I’ll update in a bit whenever we find out.

@8 I don’t thing COD needs to evolve because it’s aimed at a certain type of audience who is unable to adapt to newer possibly more complicated games. now Guitar Hero had a different kind of audience.

Heh. It’s all in relation to the 2 million/£83 million figures: CT said they’re “unverified” right now.

I’m pretty sure Rockstar don’t care too much about LA Noires CE because there are so many games out and they know how the sales did on consoles. The thing about LA Noire, is it’ll pick up with steady and slow sales with sales in the years to come. That’s how it’ll make a profit.

@11
1. All games need to evolve because there is no “perfect” game. There is always something that can be improved, even if it’s just a minor thing. We wouldn’t have strong franchises like CoD, BF, GTA or FIFA if things wouldn’t evolve.
2. Saying that the CoD audience is unable to adapt to newer possibly more complicated games is just narrow-minded. What’s your point anyways? Leave the complication of the game to the players of the game. If you’re good at something it’s not complicated. So the people who suck at CoD might find the game complicated while others don’t. The same goes for any other game. If you dislike the franchise, then fine, but please don’t make ridiculous statements and generalize for a whole audience.
