Report: Next-gen Xbox details at CES, hex-core CPU inside
French site Xboxygen is rumouring that Microsoft is to make some kind of announcement related to the next Xbox at Las Vegas tech show CES in January.

The information, according to the site, comes from a source “very close” to the company.
The story’s also rumouring that the machine is to have a hex-core CPU with 2GB of DDR3 RAM and has been in the works since 2005 – the year Xbox 360 released. AMD is to provide the GPU, according to the piece.
As previously rumoured, Xboxygen says a division called Loop is handling software development on the project, while another team, Infinity, is working on the console itself.
The site has been told to not expect a “huge announcement” with software, but rather “some information on the new console, and some of its capabilities”.
Talk of Microsoft’s next console has gathered pace in the second half of 2011, with chatter beginning in earnest around E3. EA was tipped to have started work on the machine – a story that was quickly denied – with a further two stories pinning a reveal on E3 2012.
Four Microsoft CVs turned up mentions of “Xbox next-gen” in October, with a Develop story later that month claiming Microsoft would show the console for the first time at E3 2013.
CES 2012 runs from January 10-13.

2gb of ram doesn’t sound like much at all. Ram chips are so cheap nowadays I’d be amazed if that was correct for a next-gen console.

Couldn’t give a flying fuck about the specs, to be honest.
As long as the games are good and the online service is up to scratch, that’s really all I care about.

I reckon the RAM figure’s off. It’s got to have 4Gb even to be current, not to hang around for another 10 years.

2Gb of DDR3 — are pretty low and slow. Xbox360 got GDDR3 memory, so DDR4 or GDDR5 speed should be normal for nextgen.

personally whateva they do nextgen, they need to make it so you can keep your gamertag, achievements, the amount of ppl who would be so pissed off if they cant transfer all their xboxlive stuff. I would be annoyied esp with the amount of arcade games ive purchased and dlc.

It’s some obscure french site, they’re probably making up bullshit for attention.
And yeah, 2/4gb DDR4 seems more likely for next gen.

2 GB Ram?
Oh Wow… Thats so next generation. My current gen PC had 8 GB Ram since 2007.
Ram don’t cost much these days and it’s not enough memory for the next gen, unless they are going to create a WII 2 console with XBOX brand.

As a PC gamer I’d welcome a new generation of underpowered consoles.
I’m sure that Microsoft and Sony can pull a lot more out of those specs for dedicated gaming machines, but looking at the current hardware, the only real technological showcase that developers are able to do on consoles is all about optimization.
For publishers I think that might become a prestige problem, so I’m thinking that throws a bit of business to the PC. And thank you for that.

A console works differently you bunch of noobs. On PC you have a RAM-hungry OS (i.e. windows) to deal with, which you don’t on a 360 or PS3. That’s why next-gen consoles can get by with a lot less RAM than my über PC.

maybe it’s 2gb of GDDR3.

@12, depends if this is 2GB shared system and video, just system or just video.
2GB shared would be poor (very fucking poor) for a next gen system no matter how much memory your OS takes up (and to be sure the next iteration of console OS will be a big step up in complexity)

Most tablets will nearly have those specs by that time, considering nvidias roadmap ….

Guys, figure out what the G stands for in GDDR. Although the more Graphics dedicated memory, the better, I’m going to guess 2GB of DDR3 & 2GB of GDDR5 RAM.

@12, you are wrong because OS also takes a huge chunk of memory on consoles .
For this generation PS3′s OS takes a large chunk of OS thats just as a small example.
Next gen consoles are probably going to have multitasking in a lot of ways so 2GB is the minimum. also, they are probably going to do much more than current gen 360 or PS3.
@9, someone who wants to play games that are more than corridor shitty shooters. M’kay?

@15, ehem… most smartphones will soon have 2 GB of ram.
@18, not exactly. Console CPU is much more important, because console lifespan depends on the CPU.
Videocard is also important but i guess it will be Nvidia’s 100 series GPU which is this current gen for the PC. (That sucks of course)
Next Year Nvidia will introduce “Kepler” and “Maxwell” codenamed cards which will never be on consoles and thats very, very sad because they are going to be around 2014.

MS is so focused on Kinect that I could see them doing the 2GB to cut down cost, as we all know the kinect will have to come built in with the next xbox.
If Sony releases a 4GB box, yay Sony, and I’ll buy a PS4, but im afraid that they might do the same.
MS, please place 4GB in the box, 2GB is not enough for super high res textures, and will be more streaming from HD and DVD again. I fear for the future of the next gen consoles, especially for the next xbox, as MS is so focused on Kinect, which I could care less about.

4 GB is a basic memory for consoles of the next gen, but for now it’s already not too much. But i guess some of the consoles will eventually use 4GB. Will it be PS3 or 360? Who knows.
but it will be hillarious if consoles will have only 2 GB.
@21, yeah, i know. I use Nvidia as the exmaple. Because i don’t know much about AMD/Radeon technology. I’m not in to AMD cards. But they are really good in my opinion. Just not my thing.
@22, well, thats absolutely true.

Chances of this info being right: 3%
Chances of the internet arguing over it anyway: 99%
Lets at least wait for some sites with at least a little credibility to start making things up before we go mad over it.

Maybe i want too much, but for a 5-10 years machine that will be released in 2012/2013 i want 8gb of ram, i can even accept 4gb, but not 2gb.
Curious about the hex-core cpu.

@28: i know! XD And they are right!
Another rumor said that the next xbox could be cheap, maybe these two rumors are correlated.
Another one said that the console will be called “ten”, will run a version of windows and will feature a tegra.
This rumor made me think of a portable console, tegra and windows like smartphones, “ten” = 10 = X, Xbox X it’s horrible, so i think of a portable X(box).

I don’t see it sporting a Tegra chipset to be honest, especially in light of the heavily corroborated rumour that ATI are back onboard once again to produce the graphical guts for the machine.
I also don’t see it happening either for the fact that Nvidia and MS had a pretty sour relationship after the original XBox IIRC.

@34 You could be right. Ultimately though, specs are just a potential means to an end, that end being great games and so I am not really too bothered how the innards fare, so long as what I put into it is decent
