“Cloud specific things” on its way to Xbox, says MS exec

The cloud is on its way to Xbox, according to Microsoft exec Brian Prince.

“You will be seeing things in the Xbox platform that’s cloud-specific,” said Prince, speaking at GDC China, as caught by Gamasutra.

“I’m already doing it, it’s really exciting, but I can’t tell you about it or else I’ll get fired.”

Microsoft’s already promised cloud-based saves as part of the next Dashboard update, but Prince comments sound like it’l be going a lot further than that.

He also touched upon currently-existing cloud gaming platforms, OnLive and Gaikai.

“These are really gaming platforms as a service. There are some limitations here, but I really do think this is the distant future of gaming in the cloud.”

“The cloud is on its way to Xbox, according to Microsoft exect Brian Prince”.

It’s ‘Exec’, not ‘Exect’ when you’re referring to that role in shortform.

Xbox On-Live. I wouldn’t be surprised if things went in that direction at all.

@2 – Yeah, I see that happening, but not ready for it yet. Onlive is neat but you have to make some major graphic concessions compared to having the the game on a PC with a nice GPU, not to mention the lag.

Why would they bother with an On-Live system when they can just allow you to download the game itself? The bandwidth speed and download limits simply aren’t there to support these kind of services for the average consumer, and won’t be for a very long time.

I can say same day digital / retail releases happening, but not over the air gameplay.

The new cloud storage coming with the next dashboard update not only lets you copy your saves online, but save and load directly from your online storage as well. It’s far better integrated than the system on PSN, that’s for sure.

That’s the kind of direction they’re obviously going to go, where you’ll need to download far less to your console. But full game streaming? Not gonna happen guys, not when they have such a robust marketplace already.
