Quick Quotes – Epic on Gears of War 3′s on-disc DLC files

“We’re not saying that everything on the disc is the product. The disc is another delivery mechanism. We had begun DLC packs early enough, and with the extension to our schedule. It meant we had that stuff done before we shipped. We felt it was a win/win, because no one is going to have to download anything huge when the DLC comes out.

“I think the thing that makes it muddy for people is when it’s on the disc. We could have left it off and said, ‘Hey, here’s another disc.’”

– Gears of War 3 executive producer Rod Fregusson responding to Kotaku‘s questions about the game’s on-disc, paid DLC.

Epic’s view of this is one way of looking at it, I suppose.

The other is that there’s data on the game disc you bought which Epic has locked away from you and they’re now demanding you hand over even more cash before you can get at it. And not only that, they didn’t even have the courtesy to tell you when you bought the game that they weren’t going to let you play all the content on the disc you have in your hands unless you pay them more money at some unspecified date in the future.

Hands up who agrees with Epic?

If it’s on the disc when it ships, there should be no further charge. You’ve already paid the price of entry. Anything else is just gouging your customers.

When will they learn… Ok big corporation type marketing idiots, listen up.

If you don’t want the customers to feel ripped off by DLC, the 1st fucking rule you need to obey is THAT THE DLC IS NOT ALREADY ON THE DISC!

Its really that simple. Douches.

The content was made before the game shipped, it was on the disc, therefore there is NO JUSTIFICATION for charging extra for it.
They’re money-grabbing cunts.

Hands up who agrees with Epic?

I do.

You knew there was DLC coming.

What difference does it make if it’s on the disc or on a server?

@GIGAHURTZ, Well the idea that it took the dev a couple extra months to develop the dlc is a sweeter pill to swallow, than excepting they had the dlc all along, but wanted to squeeze you for some extra coin.

@OM Sad thing is when you go to the dlc add ons section on live marketplace and look for the top downloaded the skins are in the top 20.

i if i was going to do weapon skins as dlc i would of done a fan competition for best designs, give some fans a bit of feel good fame and of course free. keep paid dlc to genuine extra large packs although i’m sure epic while counting the dollar would laugh at me being so ridiculous

@OM:

But it did take them a couple of extra months.

They finished the game a long time before release, so then they were able to work on the DLC and put it on the disc before it went out on shelves.

I’d imagine that it saves them in terms of data costs, too.

We knew that this DLC was due, so people were free to make a decision whether they wanted to buy it or not a long time ago. If they didn’t want to, they’re not missing out on anything, and if they did want to, they’re still not missing out, because they intended to spend the money anyway.

@daytripper, The bean counters would probably laugh mate, but anyone with vision would see that thats the way to cultivate your fanbase and (with not much effort) get a large return….

And this is why I don’t waste money on this kind of vapid shit.

The game had little going for it beyond juvenile testosterone anyway, but the DLC that launched with the game was just taking the joke. It’s one of the most disgusting abuses of the DLC process I’ve seen in a very long time.

But hey, a shit tonne of testosterone junkies were going to buy the game anyway, so what the hey, right? Might as well just throw that shit on the disc! The idiots are going to buy it either way!

@Giga true people were made aware beforehand, just think epic could of done more for the price although the free stuff coming up and campaign dlc is a good start

@OM voting with the wallet is the only way it will change :(

@Gigahurtz, Thats a very rational view. SO HAS NO PLACE HERE!!

But many a true word spoken in jest. More than a few folk hate the idea of dlc, ALREADY BEING ON THE DISC THEY OWN.

I mean spending money on a *unlock code*… Burns my balls. I don’t care if its already written, i don’t care if its ready to ship with the game, i don’t care if it was worked on alongside the main game and they finished early…

Give me the illusion THAT ITS EXTRA FUCKING CONTENT, NOT ON THE FUCKING DISC ALREADY and i’m cool (not just me right?)

By the way i should clarify I don’t own a 360 anymore, but this kind of shit affects all formats.

@Ireland Michael, Dude you calling ALL Gears fans “testosterone junkies?” Will your trolling never end? Bad Troll!

Get laid, eat a pizza, drink a fucking beer and think some positive thoughts bro :)

No, just most.

“Get laid, eat a pizza, drink a fucking beer and think some positive thoughts bro.”

Definitely no problems on any of those accounts I assure you, “bro”.

DLC, the thorn in gamers eyes.
“We finished part of the product before we shipped it, but you will pay extra for it anyway!”

DLC is ONLY an excuse if you have to pay for something that has been developed AFTER the product already has been shipped. Read carefully: DEVELOPED, not delivered.
This is simply an “extra” way to let players pay more for the same product and is peposterous.
Only because of this I would boycot the product. Not that I was ever planning on buying this game in the first place >.> (I don’t like this game)

This is bad for the consumer no matter the “spin” on this, people should not buy DLC that is already on the disc. Remember DLC = “Downloadable” Content.
