Expect "a new standard Sonic" for 2012, says Team Sonic producer

Team Sonic head Takashi Iizuka has promised an all-new "standard" Sonic the Hedgehog for next year.

His comments come in a Gamasutra interview celebrating the series' 20th anniversary, with Sonic Generations launching in Europe today on PS3 and 360.

"I would like to make a new standard Sonic, a modern Sonic if you will, in 2012 and beyond," Iizuka said.

He insisted that Generations' release, however, was not the start of something new for the series, but rather a celebration of the past 20 years of the IP.

"I wouldn't say that I think Generations is a new start. Instead, it's more of the peaks of the past 20 years, is the way we're approaching this. Generations is about taking the past 20 years of history and rolling it into one really fun product."

Besides Generations, there's also Sonic 4: Episode 2 still to come, info of which is coming soon, according to what Sega West CEO Mike Hayes told VG247 before gamescom.
