Grand Theft Auto V to take place in San Andreas

Wednesday, 2 November 2011 08:51 GMT By Staff

Rockstar’s released the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto V, as promised last week, confirming it will take place in San Andreas.

The confirmation of the game’s locale comes a year after speculation, first started by VG247 last summer and backed up by Kotaku last week, that Los Angeles – or an LA-like city, like San Andreas – would be where it took place.

The San Andreas we seen today looks completely different to the one we seen seven years ago on PS2, similar to the overhaul Liberty City got between GTA III and GTA IV.

One familar landmark that’s shown in the video, however, is the Vinewood sign.

The end of the trailer still doesn’t show a date or any platforms, however. We’ll get onto Rockstar about it now.

There might actually be a small chance the internet doesn’t explode. Just thinking of the timing. I’m pretty sure GTA4s was counting down to 5pm or something like that so a lot more people were able to tune in. With it being 4pm less people will as they’re coming home at that time or still at work.

So there are Los Santos signs all over the place on the golf club and other places. The car plates are from Sand Andreas. There are open areas so I believe that you start in Los Santos like in GTA:SA and then travel the other regions.

    #91 4 years ago
  92. Quiiick

Sure, Los Angeles isn’t very “nouveau” but still a great place for GTA.
Any eastern-europe capital (like Prague, Budapest or Moscow) would have been better though …

    #92 4 years ago
  93. DSB

@76 I’m pretty sure they have a lot more to reveal. Making a game set just in Hollywood wouldn’t be very interesting, especially since they’ve done most of the Bay Area in San Andreas before.

Looked sweet. Cant wait for more info on main character (looks like its that hispanic looking dude in the car and running away from the cops ). Planes are back it appears and the buildings look bloody huge as does the mountain those back packers are walking up.

I think it will focus on Los Santos with Vinewood and surrounding small town locations.

If they have remade ALL of San Andreas i’d be amazed.

There are signs like Los Santos fitness club also road signs like East Los Santos and numerous other stuff. Also I just saw a sonic jet and don’t forget the plane if there are vehicles of that sort it’s gotta be a huge map.

Thoughts: This game will die (for me) if you can’t use every inch of that awesome landscape. I want to find food in the bottom of dumpsters and trashcans, kick up drug dens and steal all their gear, guns and ammo hidden behind the cupboards in NCIS-style raid sequences, not GTA’s usual bastardized combat.

And for all those planes, bikes, cars and other vehicles, they’d better feel like you’re flying, riding or driving them. And then it had better be deep. Deeper than a grave dug by the mafia’s finest diggers. I don’t want pissy goto A, do B to C and come back missions. The missions in GTAV had better have heart, soul, logic and reason, that affects the city and the people in it.

@#106 you could be right there. Only time will tell

After rewatching it many times it looks like the oldish looking guy with the greying hair will be the main player chracter. He appears in many shots (mid shot back to cam, the heist wearing red jump suits and driving the blue convertable and the VO makes more sense too)

some folks speculate its Ray Liotta doing the VO. if thats the case will we be playing an older and wiser (guy) Tommy ?

Just for clarification, its generally accepted (and stated openly by the Housers themselves) that the current gen Grand Theft Autos have no relation to the last gen titles. Especially in regards to past character. They’re done and dusted.

Not even the cities bare any resemblance to the previous games, bar the names they keep reusing. They can basically do whatever the hell they want want with them. So any speculation based on past titles is probably a waste of time.

Heard that the protagonist’s name is Adrian, so far the rest of that rumour I read seems spot on, he seems Hispanic, it’s based in San Andreas (which to be fair was the most speculated guess) & it seems obvious that you start off in Los Santos.

Other parts of this rumour include: SA It’s based in 2012, the return of multiplayer including a co-op story, it’ll include all the cities from San Andreas, just a little larger, turf wars returned (something I had a love-hate relationship with in SA, the hate mainly being that I took most of the city then done a mission which made my progress irrelevant), we’ll get the national guard rather than the military for the 6th star, car modding is back, improved cover system, girlfriends have returned (sigh) & there are multiple endings based on moral choices* (apparently there’s 4, 2 good & 2 bad).

No guarantee that this is all true, but it’s got me pretty convinced.I guess once we hear the name of the protagonist, we can either confirm or dismiss this.

*Potenteial spoiler* Also seems that R* may end up continuing their tradition involving the protagonist that’s been set from their past 2 games depending on your decisions.

@120: Aren’t trying to be so realistic anymore? That’s a huge downer. :/

    #122 4 years ago
  123. Erthazus

@122, A lot of people didn’t liked realism in GTA4 because it was in the middle of a typical arcadish GTA gameplay and realism which was not fun for some people.

In my opinion Rockstar should do like this: One game with more realistic gameplay and story, next one your everyday arcadsih gameplay and etc.

Variety with each title is much better.

  124. Petulant Radish

@106, I think you’re wrong. There are too many pointers to regions outside the city for it just to be urban based. The jet, the wind farm, the mountain scene, the various other small things that I’ve no doubt missed. It’ll be a big one, and hopefully a more fun one that doesn’t involve pandering to shit friends.

In summary: You + Nostradamus =bad, mountains + jet = good.

Not the comments shit for brains, the frigging title of the article and picture which is plastered across the front page…it couldve just said “GTA V trailer goes live” or “holy shitballs its GTA V” for all I care…and then went into detail within the text of the article while warning that those wishing to view the trailer and find out for themselves would be spoiled of the location…

Even though its been rumoured that it was going to be San Andreas/Los Santos/Vinewood forever now since that Kotaku article outed it a while ago

If you look at the video as a whole, you can see things like the private jet, aswell as the military jet. The scene with the family by the mountains i can firmly believe we will be able to explore these mountains. Why there would be speculation to why we could not? I dont know..but think of games such as Just Cause and Just Cause 2 these worlds…both very massive could easily be done by rockstar, now im not saying its gonna be that big, but in my oppinion it should be about 2-3 times larger than the previous san andreas…i liked gta iv but the shabby like 5 min drive from sultan rs spawn to airport to me…just isnt enough. I hope the use features like they have shown in the video such as the convertible working and such. Also the scenery should move like the Oil wells and the Windmills not just sit completely still.

    #136 3 years ago
  137. stef16374

but you can say the map is going to be very large. I mean, if you see the size of the freeway and how big the mountains are. If we can go over the mountains….. in san andreas it was possible to, so… and it would be really nice if there are some animals in the mountains too. But we’ll see when R* comes with more news.

  • Destiny: 14 things you might have missed during House of Wolves intel drops

Destiny: House of Wolves does a great deal more than just slap some new content on the existing game structure. House of Wolves changes Destiny in a lot of interesting and very welcome ways. • Please just watch this terrific trailer for Toren

Toren is the kind of game I dream about when I drift off to sleep at night. This indie puzzle adventure strikes a spark in my little soul in the same way as Ico and Tequila Works’ Rime do. Mysterious, almost ethereal fantasy setting – check. Chance to actually walk around in that setting – […]
